Poor rich people

Vimothy, you need to read a lot more about the American free market by Americans.

Yeah, because I'm not reading enough American free market texts.

I can't think of a single American libertarian who would say that the ghetto wasn't created by American governing policies or that America is a "meritocracy."

Actually, I just mentioned one

Is it rocket science? Why do you think you earn more money than me?

because my teacher in one of my grad courses who is a CEO thought i'd be a good employee and hired me, based on my understanding of business models that he taught. that's why i earn more than you. i was in the right place at the right time, and had networked my way into a grad school scholarship that paid at least 30% of my costs.

nope. i work for a continuing medical educatino company that creates ad space for big pharma

So when I see a full-page spread advertising Xyzoxylon(©) - "The ALL NEW behaviour-amelioration solution for the under-twos!" - I'll know you had a hand in it somewhere? ;)

Sure, a friend of mine, from a very wealthy background died of a herion overdose recently. but so what? My argument is statisitical. the probability that you do well if your parents do well is bigger, even in the west. if you are below a certain level, the probability that you will do well, is near 0.

My condolences. I know quite a few rich "waste cases" myself but still nowhere near the number of rich success stories I know.

Yes. I drank the kool-aid. Finally. So I could have mine.

Too bad. My earning potential is huge. I already know I'll be making twice what I am now within 5 years, easily.

Why should I care? No, I actually think that's great for you (although generally, biography = boring)

Sucks to be you.

Not really. My life is pretty great at the moment. £17k is probably not quite enough for me, but still plenty of money to keep me in books, stout and ganjay-weed for the month.

Why do all the threads on economics always end up tedious slugfests?

Why do all the arguments about "economics" on here persist at a level of sophomoric nonsense that only deserves to be answered in kind?

Biography is only being brought up as it pertains to the discussion at hand, of course.

How is your life great? I thought "more money" meant "better" in a free market economy?

Why do all the threads on economics always end up with tedious slugfests?

Because of:

a) polarised opinions, with perhaps a tinge of evangelical attitudes

b) the nature of wage-slavery under capitalism meaning that a lot of us are letting off steam whilst pretending to work

Oh god. I love it when people choose a black ultra-conservative then call them a "libertarian"

That's exactly my experience. The family next door bought their son a hotel, when they realised that his careers as a DJ, a race-driver and as a party promoter didnt go anywhere.

In any case, that's all just anecdotal evidence. The rich developed countries are in fact not so bad when it comes to social mobility in comparison with the third world..

Why do you have to turn an argument about abstract things (markets, income disparity) into bull-shit about the US government making the ghettos and puttting people in them? Why are you trying to trumpet your success around like I should be really gutted in a self-centred manner, despite the fact that I've spent this entire thread arguing in support of just that (i.e. people (like you) earning money (like you do), regardless as to whether I do or not (which I don't ))?

Ghettoes somehow exist in some sort of vacuum outside the "abstract" forces of markets and economies? Are you joking?

Maybe you *don't* have the skills to earn what I earn.
