Eto'o for Zlatan? Mourinho is a genius. And Barca appear to be sabotaging themselves, swapping a mobile, tireless, excellent finisher for a flat track bully

Why are Barcelona relentlessly trying to rid themselves of Eto'o? It's crazy. The guy is part of a magnificent forward triumvirate that socres about 348 goals in one season,a nd scores in the CL final..what else can he do?

Weird, innit. He's only got a year left and is obviously 'high maintenance', but replacing him with Zlato is just so wrong. Could understand if they were shipping out to make room for Villa.

Bayern's second team took apart a hopeless Milan 4-1.

Bayern-Utd grudge match in the final.

Bobby Robson died today...one of the good guys of football :(

Indeed. Remember reading Peter Taylor's All Played Out about the Italia 90 campaign. The press were after his blood, the team were shaping tactics, Taylor was sniffing around for a story, but Robson always emerged with good grace.

He was also the most forgetful man in football and got everyone's name wrong, including his captain Bryan Robson, who he used to call Bobby.

RIP Rir Sobby Bobson.

Agreed - I remember when he was manager of Ipswich, turned an ordinary side into a graceful team - lovely to watch. always aware of what was happening 'on the continent' as they used to say and brought in a couple of first class dutch guys who really sparkled at home and in Europe.

Well respected in europe where he worked with the dutch regularly.

top fellow all round and sadly missed.

we're at home to luton saturday! luton! fucking luton! a *proper* club.

too excited about afc's first game in the conf.

also, wrote a sort of 'afc primer' for lefties in the ns http://www.newstatesman.com/sport/2009/08/fans-football-united-club won't be news to most of you i expect, but still, fc united of manchester are perhaps less well known. outside of manchester, anyway. their fans were effing great fun the other week i must say.

not that it means anything, but Alty pissed all over the Hatters at Kenilworth in the cup last year for the vast majority of the match (although in the replay things were more even and they won on pens). their fans are a top bunch, anyway, we entertain Ebbsfleet on Saturday.

Oxford York and Cambridge ("the RIVER PLATE of non-league football") v Barra are other Satd stand-outs for me.
will be watching Chester with interest this season.

my views on FC are a tad ambivalent, fair play for the Bhopal sponsorship first time around i will say. there's a Liverpool FC equivalent that formed, no?

nice article Dan :D

We taunted them with "we'll never play you again" when we beat them 5-1 and relegated them two years ago. What goes around...

My brother's at the game, says he'll be shocked if the keeper (debut today) ever plays for us again. We had quite a good pre season, beat Wigan in a friendly. Ah, pre-season optimism, you old tease...

Edit: 1-7 full time. One of those results you've really got to take in slowly...

in Conference news, crisis club Cambridge and a point for AFC!

shame about Tranmere.

Hull are so wank i'm sure Aberdeen could beat them in a competitive match..

You've already played a proper *proper* club :p:p:p

lol fair. pre-season friendly tho, cmon ;) give us a year or two we'll come play you in the league (ah, misplaced hubris)

Edit: 1-7 full time. One of those results you've really got to take in slowly...

i find it's better to pretend it never happened. i think the worst i saw were a couple of 5-0s and 5-1s against the dons at selhurst park in the 90s, usually arsenal or spurs for some reason. pretty sure i saw klinsmann (4 goals in a 6-2 win) and lineker both get hat-tricks against us, ian wright too. i also saw the beckham goal from the half-way line - 'the goal of the decade' or whatever, and tony yeboah's wonder goal. some era-defining attacking moments took place at selhurst, all against wimbledon. :slanted:

in Conference news, crisis club Cambridge and a point for AFC!

it was a great result - luton are supposed to be favourites, should be 1 possibly even 2 leagues higher than conference etc.. they bullied us with their superior touch and fitness and bombarded the goal in the first half. but we clawed it back, and our talisman john main (30 odd goals last season) came off the bench to win a penalty with ten mins left. v pleased with the start to the season, we need to see if the inferior fitness is a problem as the season progresses, we're still not a full-time team.

this can certainly be a Conference factor. Alty are part-time and Tamworth were the last time i checked (given they've only just come up again i'm assuming so still). idk about Gateshead and Barrow but i imagine they're part time.

Mansfield started well and they're sounding confident.

in terms of rivals this will be a weird year for Alty with no Northwich and all the main Manc non-league teams at least a division below. Barrow are the only people we have traditional with that are left, although in recent years Tamworth have upped their 'insufferable knobhead' factor no end.

Basic Instinct 2 was his finest moment, I still maintain.

Does anyone else support a club that feels like it has been created solely to harness a feeling of existential despair? In my case it's Wednesday. Best days behind us (1993-5 are not coming back soon, or anytime), not sufficiently dramatic to fully do "a Leeds", and with a fully-honed ability to raise spirits briefly before crushing them, or (even more often) to only start winning games when promotion has already been rendered impossible by taking about 3 points from the first 27.

Oh, and (even in our heyday) we had the knack of falling apart and losing by preposterously large scores (a 6-1 drubbing by Leeds on live TV sticks in the mem-...craw). And then there was the 7-1 by Forest.

i think there was an 8-1 too...maybe to Blackburn? I've filtered that one out, obviously.
