He was something of an anachronism even at the time. His reference points were all people like Baudelaire and Wilde and he was always being photographed staggering around London in suits and top hats and things like that.

I think that stuff has transferred (at least in the mainstream) to rappers now. Face tattoos and Xanax addiction. Nihilistic lyrics. As far as I'm aware (which isn't much admittedly) guitars just aren't cool anymore.
