It's The Ashes!

gives the 6 batsman option. could be utilised if theyre going to drop broad and flintoff also goes so you bring in the bowler and the batsman to replace two "all-rounders"

I guess maybe they'll rest Fred for a game and maybe drop Broad and bring in Sidebottom and Harmy giving both swing and bounce options...

And suddenly Swann's batting at 7

Who is Trott?

I'm feeling despondent about the series now, fearing the pendulum has swung back to Aus after they're rather-more-impresssive-than-Cardiff last day heroics. English attack is like the old jazz saying...don't mean a thing if it ain't got that.... For that reason alone Harmy is a must - someone's gotta shake those fuckers up.

Hope for a won toss at Headlngley and a big 1st-innings score, just to bat Aus out of the match. At least then we can't lose the series, even if they do get to keep the Ashes.

btw, does dissensus have any Australians (expat Anglos don't count)?

ian jonathan trott. plays for warwickshire. averages 97.5 with the bat in first class cricket this season. never played a test match. played, albeit flakily, in the twenty20 world cup team.

surely the ashes would still be on it's current cycle though wouldn't it? they'd have to retain certain bilateral series.

it's all very interesting, and quite exciting. although knockout semi finals, uh? but that would mean only one round? and what about draws?

and eight teams... bye bye bangla?

best of 3-match series means space for 9 matches to get from one end to the other, which realistically means at least (plucks number from air) 12 weeks - it also means England would be fucked for ever staging it.

Who'd bet the cup on us going 3 month without the weather ripping the heart out of the tournament?

as for bilateral series, I get the impression test cricket is shrinking into 'white' countries (controversially including S Africa in that category  purely cos of the sport's following). The subcontinent isn't that fussed and the Windies would love to jack it in entirely for a version they're half good at.

No Flintoff. A shame, but he was clearly unfit at Edgbaston (and Lords, but whatever)...

So, who should come in? If we only bring in a bowler, I'd go for Harmison, for variety's sake. We've got enough swing already, so no real need for another swing bowler (Sidebottom). Agnew on Today was suggesting that Trott might come in, and we'd go with 4 bowlers plus Colingwood/ Bopara/ Trott chipping in with 12-16 overs between them...

Does Broad count as a bowler in that equation?:slanted:

I can see the temptation to play Trott, packing the batting and playing for a draw, but we need variety, someone who can get wickets without cloud cover. Get Harmy in.

Harmison owes us big time - let's hope this time he doesn't let us down

More pressure on Collingwood/Prior etc to make runs now as we have lost the quick scoring KP and FF.

Cook needs a good test as well

Shit, it's tense one, isn't it?

for me broad has either got to be flintoff's replacement or dropped altogether. there's not space for him as a specialist bowler unless flintoff is about for me.

routes

we can delay.ay.ay...
i totally agree ^ broad needs to step up. sidebottom should come in, he's simply a better bowler. i have zero faith in harmison.

bops needs a biggun too....

Looks like panic over - Collingwood with the gloves would have been an interesting prospect!
