It's The Ashes!

not in a baffled way you understand, in a curious way, because he was excellent in the last ashes. but then it's easier to bowl well in a good team. ask jason gillespie.

ok here's my prediction and i hope im wrong

strauss has made a big mistake batting first. his hand has been forced by prior. there's a lot of dampness on the field and the sun is out...

oh fuck

let me finish:

it's going to swing today. we'll get whittled out. then we're reliant on weather conditions for tomorrow.

we would have been better getting out our great swing bowlers in for the excellent conditions and running through their top order whilst we could.

we shall see how it goes, but i've got a horrible feeling, here comes the aus test victory,:slanted:

at 11.15 i did start writing before a wicket had fallen.

72-6. fucks sake. why the hell are we batting?! did strauss even consider bowling?

Strauss - marvellous batter, awful captain (just look at bowling choices made when we had Australia on the rack last test)

Hard to choose a favourite stat from that performance. You'd normally go for only two batsmen in double figures, but I prefer only three batsmen made it beyond 3

Well they're one down for 14. At this rate they'll be all-out for 140, a small first innings lead of 38 and a moral victory for England.

@ jenks. i totally disagree, i think he's an excellent captain. why not look at some of his GOOD bowling choices in this series? eg. starting with onions on the 4th morning of the last test, even though he had been totally ineffectual up to that point. he got 2 wickets in his first over.

sticking with Broad too long, not turning to Swann...

i just feel he doesn't go for the jugular enough and has been guilty of letting the match drift

he doesn't look too fucking clever in this match either, does he?

So it's less than an hour since tea and the Aussies have bowled us out and overtaken us.

Even in England's vast annals of crapness (and we all lived through the 90s so you know what I mean), this has to be pretty special.

Harmison fails to justify his selection - continuing to bowl as badly as when he last played for England.

Awful, just awful.

i can think of one (english) person who'll be loving this harmison 'display'...duncan fletcher!!

re continuing with broad, not bringing on swann. i seem to recall it was clarke and hussey batting at the time... two of the best players of spin in the world! but anyway no, he hasn't looked too clever today!

We can, at least, agree on that!

Tomorrow we have got to come out of the traps firing like on day 2 of the last test when we took 7 for 70ish. Then Strauss and Cook have to drop anchor for at least a day to give us any chance of a draw.

I shall be going to see Southend - Huddersfield to assauge my pain.
