I think @Benny B was lamenting the lack of bacon in Spain. If so, same goes for Portugal, it's weird that they do a million incredible things with pork, yet somehow bacon is like gold dust. Got some the other day and had the simplest sanger with bacon, lettuce and ketchup and I was in heaven.

Today I had to make do with this stuff

Luckily though it is also fucking awesome. Again I just grilled it and it's beautiful, the fat goes sticky and the whole thing is dripping with taste. Stuck between bread with a few onions to cut through the richness and some green stuff to make it really really healthy - I can't imagine anyone in the world had a better lunch, it's almost time for bed and I cannot wait to wake up and call it lunchtime so I can justify eating the same again, except maybe two of them...

Let's Talk About Ceps
This borders on art photography, there's a Rich aesthetic in these shots. The DOTD photo genre. DOTDism.
It's all in how you smear the pork grease on your phone's camera lens before taking the photo, to give it that ethereal, almost oneiric quality.

Been fine-tuning the wonderful food I created the last few days - the same basic pork sandwiches but with mustard and slices of apple added, the perfect yoghurt nuts and honey mix for dessert.

Best enjoyed on a sunny balcony with coffee and a cig.

I've also been inspired to try my hand at the @IdleRich school of cookery, here's a cheeky little goulash i whipped up last night:

Guinea fowl stuffed with shiitake, crevettes and foie gras, wrapped in pancetta and baked in a maple briquette-fired kiln, served with a sauce of Perigord truffles, double cream and cognac, potatoes dauphinoise and asparagus poached in buffalo butter.

Great!

This Russian guy who's been staying with us is staying with a friend on the other side of the river in Caparica and I went to see him there the other day. We went to a place called Indian Grill - was a nice enough place but the food was nothing to get excited about. Speaking to the staff and as often happens in Indian restaurants one of them excitedly told me he'd lived in the UK - must have been a while back though cos he said he'd owned this place for more than twenty years and he'd forgotten virtually all his English.

Portugal is rightly not known for its kebabs, if you're used to what you can get in London or Germany or the millions of countries from which the kebabs there are drawn then you will be horrified when you see what you get offered here.

However Zak's Kebab in my town does offer some pretty good bad-good food if you just eat it for what it is and forget everything you know about kebabs, or just forget their food - despite the name - is in any way related to kebabs.

I just ate one of their delicious stroke utterly appalling donor boxes. Just a solid lump of meat mixed in with chips and synthetic cheese and spicy garlicky sauce.

Cat was interested. Probably has more appeal to him than the average dissensian sophisticate.

I actually took my Russian guest there the other day, really didn't know what he would make of it. He ordered a donor box too and I anxiously watched him eat it, like one of those things when they hold their breath until the critic finally pronounces a verdict, wondering if he might spit it back in my face. Eventually after a last swallow and a long thoughtful pause he said... "For three euros seventy-nine that is deliciously tasty and very filling".

While I was waiting for it to be made I nipped to the bar next door to try and get in a 'bab mood, it was closing up but she served me a massive glass of wine while she brushed the floor. It was only fifty cents so I had three in quick succession, it just seemed that it would be better enjoyed half-cut.

From the book I'm reading, what the hell is this dish? I thought broiling was like grilling but how do you eat grilled bones?
