who knows...
i guess i should clarify that it's hard to champion the music under the "Dubstep" banner anymore, more so then the music in and of itself.

not sure if i posted about this here or not but....

i helped bring Joe Nice back to minneapolis a couple weeks ago, now promotion wasn't the best it could have been (kind of out of my hands type thing) and our turnout definitely reflected that. however my buddy who i was throwing the show with was informed by one of the punters that we really should have booked someone like Excision or Vaski to bring the REAL dubstep because what we were playing he didn't even consider to be dubstep (dmz, tempa, hessle, deep medi, swamp 81, tectonic, etc. etc.).

i don't get it.

and really don't feel any kind of connection to these kids in the least bit.

On the subject of Burial, what has he done that's really... new? I mean, aside from Fostercare (Which was excellent, as far as I'm concerned) and those tunes Kode 9 previewed on Benji B over what... two years ago?

And no, I don't count the stuff where he's working with people. Because save the Four Tet stuff, that was all "Let me throw in Burial, and have him make a BURIAL SONG."; not "I'm going to collaborate".

Basically, their clueless.

No, not really. Look, at the end of the day, the market's so saturated with wobble artists and wobble tracks that for all I know, wobble's a bit bigger than dubstep. And it's easier to pin down than dubstep.

I'm relatively young, so when the friends I introduced to dubstep try to show me these wobble artists they've discovered on their own, I admittedly roll my eyes at it... but they enjoy it, so fuck it. Why should they bother with someone like Mala, who doesn't play what they came to 'dubstep' for? Even if he's the originator. It's like saying everyone who likes rock music should listen to Sonny Boy Williamson or something; they're not going to, and they don't have to, because MAYBE they don't like it. Even if it's not good.

If it was all about making good music, then Skream could've retired before this year began. Or Benga a long time before.

i've been saying it for nearly two years, "dubstep" is over: there's been an amicable divorce between the word (which the wobblers grabbed) and the spirit of open bass-lead innovation, which lives on in a myriad new ways, be it Oneman, Hyperdub, Night Slugs, LHF, Hemlock etc etc.

yeah...
will a new burial album really matter? or will it just kind of be a sad reminder of how good things were/could have been.....

surely this is alway what burial has been about anyway, and what makes him good, a sad reminder of utopias passed or never realised, and not even some 2005 dubstep dream but a more general rave euphoria that he was never a part of.

REAL dubstep because what we were playing he didn't even consider to be dubstep....

I think one positive thing that has happened. Is that alot of people who had come to dubstep (early) from a mostly dnb background, but are now getting deep into house. Have spent alot of time going back and looking at the roots, digging up Chicago and Detroit again rather then just jumping on whatever is around at the moment. You can see in mixes and radio sets over the last few years.

I always wonder did people learn something from seeing the way dubstep went (eg. people not knowing who Loefah is), and try and have a bit more respect for house and what its supposed to be about.

I've been trying not to fall into that, but I think I've been feeling that awhile too. I didn't want to feel like I was "giving up" or turning my back on it, but it's just a word really. and not identifying it with what i'm trying to do doesn't really change anything besides the semantics.

the kids can have the word. fuck'em (it) ; )

totally agree. it's really just odd that kids that show so much enthusiasm for dubstep who have just found it aren't digging deeper into it and don't really seem to have much interest to dig deeper.

whenever i'm playing techno or house-esque stuff it always feels weird if one of my techno dj buddies is around because i feel like im not doing it right or not respecting it enough because i dont have 1000 underground resistance records at home. but that's probably a good thing in the long run.

Re American (kids) not getting dubstep, I suspect it's some sort of geo-cultural ting.
It was much publicised and oft discussed topic in the Drum and Bass world - Americans* generally not "getting it".
They seem to either draw for either the hiphop influenced stuff or Skullstep harder-than-thou thing (see: Tyranny's Law).

*Of course, now days that refers to north of the border as well.
