An incipient interest in plants and flowers

I take this as a sign that I am entering my twilight years Last week I was on a massive comedown from glastonbury and I soothed myself by watching an old series on iPlayer about a horticulturalist from lancashire living in Essex and tending to her garden (assisted by her doddery deaf old...

    1994 was 30 years ago

The year I saw "The Lion King" at the cinema, I was 9 years old, what a time to be alive, a year i remember (rose tintedly) as sunny https://community.netweather.tv/topic/80773-july-1994/ I think this was probably when I was really 'getting into' music, in the sense of buying cassettes and...

    Psycho thrillers

    - Convoluted/absurd plots, but the plot isn't exactly the point, so okay - Moral murk - Implicating the viewer in the crime - Voyeurism - Taboo sex urges - Noir - Nihilism - Shadowy or luridly colourful cinematography @luka This could be a broad field though. I was just watching Netflix's...

    Dance music/race/revolution (essay)

Just read this and thought it might be of interest to people on here. I've pasted it in cos there's a paywall thingy. https://thebaffler.com/salvos/dance-dance-revolution-adjei-kontoh “LET’S LOOK at the stats, I’ve got the facts / My money like Lizzo, my pockets are fat!” Boy-rat hybrid Ben...

How full of rage are you?

Does it make sense to even talk about being "filled with" rage? I think people think of anger like this, like there's an anger bucket in everybody that gets steadily filled up with anger molecules until you go berserk. "Suppressed rage", is this a real thing? I suppose it is, it's the chemical...

    The Zone of Interest

I went to see this on Monday night. I have been turning it over in my mind ever since. Questions about how effective it was to keep the Nazi protagonists at a distance from us. How effective it was to leave all atrocities more or less off-screen. Where it shaded into pretension, etc. That said...

    RIP Neil Kulkarni

Really shocked to learn this news today. I was a (VERY) latecomer to his writing, which I read on his blog and latterly Substack, and although I often vehemently disagreed with him on musical matters I also thought he was a fantastic writer and clearly a hugely passionate music lover.

could this be the worst thread ever? apart from the one about pencil sharpeners

There's probably crossover with the 6/10 movies luka mentioned in the main film thread lately (do we need ANOTHER film thread? probably not) I'm wondering about watching 'THE NORTHMAN' tonight, has anyone seen it?

    Martin's top 100

This is all I(/we) want for Christmas Why? Because he's hilarious, because he's got stories, because he's got good taste (and not the same taste as most of dissensus) because he talks about music as a part of life, because he knows about other, sometimes arcane, stuff (because he hipped me...

Now-commonplace musical opinions held amongst the 'cool' that would have been unthinkable to hold in your 'cool' youth

I've noticed particularly in the last ten years that everything that was once deemed incredibly uncool has become cool. Pretty sure happy hardcore is now seen as really cool by hipsters. (I was into happy hardcore when I was 13 btw) Not sure if this is just the way of the world or the internet...
