Before you post yet another, ask yourself

The industry is no more boring, safe and predictable than it was a decade a go when jungle was everywhere... and jungle didn't emerge out of a unified rave scene, quite the opposite, it was an effect of the disintegration of the rave consensus but perhaps jungle was satisfied with that...

so it's antony and the jonsons then

I must admit, I was quite impressed.... loved the fact that that twelve-year old little fellow that the NME allow to edit it now said that Anthony and the Jonsons were both more weird AND more Radio 2 than anything that would get in that rag... further evidence that the NME worldview is trad...

who is better: paul mccartney or phil collins?

The definitive statement Patrick Bateman: Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more...

    When the levee breaks

Meanwhile, the food and other goods being 'looted' would have been immediately put to use and would in no way have been spoiled I suppose... And I know he's been through it, but is there any excuse for howlers THIS bad from a JOURNALIST?

who is better: paul mccartney or phil collins?

Yes, well that's one more reason to distrust THEM in my book.... not a feather in Phil's cap... :) Brandy doing Another Day in Paradise.... puhleeze.... I don't think McCartney's done anything to compete with 'In the Air Tonight', which is - though Woebot derided me years ago for saying it -...

That's what I meant by my unclear comments about the lack of a 'success infrastructure' in grime... there's no 'career structure', nowhere to progress to... that was part of the drama and pathos of the second Dizzee album, on which he sounds like he's adrift in a world of empty success, and the...

fair enough! I thought ppl were suggesting that I was attacking grimestas for 'wanting to be like Jay-Z'... I have no problem with that ambition at all...

Think you've missed the point of what I was trying to say. I have no problem with grime folk wanting to be as big as possible; will-to-underachievement is nothing to be proud of. No: my point was that there is a massive discrepancy between where they are now and where they want to be, with...

Yeh, I think you shd start a thread to that effect ... it would be a meta-meta thread.... :)

I think the grime malaise is part of a wider teen fantasy structure that you can get something-for-very-little ... not that dissimilar to reality TV really... they see Jay-z and think 'well, I can spit rhythms, I will get that big'... everything that was necessary for that success, not only all...

Later With Jools Holland - your favourite memories

Er... Try this thread.... (post 47) No... I just have a memory .... Perhaps your dialect-implant surgery has caused memory lapses?

You like the Futureheads. I don't think there's any medication that will sort that out.

    Cronenberg does Martin Amis

I HATE Martin Amis (Don Watson in the NME at the time of Money... 'Martin Amis is regarded as a serious literary force... by Martin Amis. Don't join him in his malady'), though I confess I haven't been able to get to one of the end of his novels... get too snarled up in all those self-regarding...

hell is tasteful people lol and glad to see some dissent here... Jools Holland is surely everything that is wrong about contemporary British pop... scratch that, everything about contemporary British culture... tea with the queen, invites to royal weddings, then some boogie-woogie pianner and...

    New Orleans

Yeh I read that there were similar storms in Cuba last year, but the casualties were massively fewer --- because the govt evacuated everyone, rather than allow only those who had their own vehicles to make their own escape.

lol, better that it's discussed here though than that another seven are started..... Number 11 eh? Don't you get to number 11 now if you ask all your friends and family to buy your record? Just because it failed doesn't mean that it wasn't intended, does it?

    New Orleans

Yeh, reminds me of that old blues standard (I think) covered by Nick Cave on Kicking Against the Pricks, 'Muddy Water'.... The poor remain subject to Nature in a way that the rich simply aren't. Natural disasters always disproportionatly affect the poor... it was the same in the tsunami in...

Cover Versions That Mess With The DNA

Yes, I was going to mention those two .... I think the VU cover is actually quite a radical reworking though.... John, the lead singer of the Seeds was called Sky Saxon, that's the Saxon connection.... (I agree that Live at the YMCA is a phenomenal live album too).

lol, i don't think it got that flamey; the most heat was generated by the exchange between yourself and me, wasn't it, and that was good-natured and good-humoured... (Think Dissensus could use a bit of heat just now... bring back Rachel Verinder.... :) ) I was waiting for Dave to start the...
