The bloke makes like for like subs and is not in the habit of changing his mind.

That's why I think it might be Crouch, obviously big differences, but kinda Heskey with goals in terms of the formation they'll play. Terry's little putsch has reduced the chance of Cole starting as it would now look like weakness on Cappo's part.

for me, Dawson is some way better than Upson. still, Upson faced more adversity given his employers last season (fuck me i'm being diplomatic to Capello here) so there is that if i am trying to be positive.

at least w one holding midfielder (though i still think i might prefer two workhorses a la Barry and Carrick, for eg, though i know he's not been training, just saying) again, A Cole should be given more opportunities as Jenks says. and GJ too. Milner and Barry and Gerrard - playing as he does for Liverpool - would be something.

as Cracker says, J Cole (no, not a magic wand, but what he represents if he does get picked) seems very unlikely now thanks to salesman Terry.

Crouch's ratio is there for all to see. he's Just Fontaine or Gerd Muller in the context of our strike-force!

hoping - w out any huge belief - for Nigeria to beat the Koreans later (which given the latter definitely seem the better team is unlikely) and the AFA boys to trounce Greece, thus ensuring a fairly improbable Nigeria passage...

the board may care to note this is an exact replica of the observation i made just prior to England trouncing Algeria in that 8-0 mullering last Friday night.

ahem.

Darned cockwombles.
We murdered them 0-0.

Now the 1230 kick-offs are gone, I'm missing them already. The withdrawal after this WC is going to be horrible. Still, amazing entertainment ahead, though groups A and B seem two of the most sorted, surprisingly. Mexico and Uruguay will be incredibly keen to avoid Argentina in round 2 though.

Yeah I'm well gutted but hopefully now I can start to have my life back. I've done nothing for the past two weeks but watch football.

Wow, what a start. Bafana into round two?

Mexico have hit the bar, so it sounds like they're not going for the Anschluss deal

interesting stuff on the Guardian podcast about 26 mins in. sounds like france's problems are about to/have acquire/d a racial dimension.

the podcast is loading really slowly (tooo much streaming going on, no doubt) - what's the deal with this?

SA would have to claw back a five/six-goal deficit vs Mexico/Uruguay to qualify...that's a hell of an ask. Being hammered by Uruguay kinda sealed their fate. Great potential result for them though, and if France fall apart, maybe a four-goal win is possible? With this French team, anythign could happen. Whatever, they've got to keep attacking for 90 mins, should be fasscinating.

OK, I got that podcast - that's incendiary stuff. This is a whole 'nother issue than most people are taking it as. This is more interesting than anything happening on the football field today, in honesty - that young players from the banlieue have no respect for 'Frenchness',rejection of national identity/ racial-class tensions etc. Must check the french papers tonight.

Fucking hell France, your one shot at redemption is letting the hosts through graciously. One chance to allow another story to knock you off the front pages tomorrow. Can't even get that right. Jesus.

without wishing to sound like an anti-RSA pooper, am overjoyed that

(a) my beloved Uruguay top the group

(b) we are probably, in all likelihood (hedging bets there eh!) heading for a Arg-Mex in R2, which should be splendid

must check out that podcast later re the French, nice one Cracker

Yeah the teams I wanted most to go through from that did, so I'm happy. Just gutted that I had a Uruguay Mexico draw down in my accumulator for the day. I've never really gambled on sport I can see myself getting well into it, what with my addictive personality anyway. When Bafana Bafana scored their second I was jumping up and down. :D

Why have they cut it to two matches a day on tv now? I don't have ITV4 and even if I did, I wouldn't want to be flicking between two games. I'd rather watch them in full, seperately.

Is it because of Wimbledon?
