Cameron 2 Japan 0, Eto first scorer, 35/1. Can't go wrong, can it?

please tell us your finger hovered over the keyboard, and then you were distracted by a colleague, and the window closed itself down? Matsui has certainly shown flashes for the Blue Samurai, although just about the biggest entertainment thus far for me has been the commentator speculating about the Portuguese ref's hypothetical stinginess in his day-job assessing insurance claims in Leiria.

as for England, let us hope Sgr Capello heeds the 4-2-3-1 shouts, that's about all we can trust in...

We need a tournament with:

Argentina, Brazil, Germany, England (just because), Netherlands, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Spain, Russia, Egypt, Italy, France in a non-shit era, USA, Mexico, Chile, North Korea.

16 teams. Enough.

not f1?

well played japan. really happy for them.

realise that everyone is pro-africa, but japan and korea recording wins shows some real progress in asia right now

indeed, and proves that 2002 was not a fluke in any way.

very glad that ghana got the win though, as i kind of feel SA blew their chance by failing to hold on vs mexico. australia's morale will hopefully be shattered, to enable ghana to progress.

ghana were very good and well organised though.

after last night everyone seems to think group d is done and dusted. i would be very surprised if it is. serbia could well upset the balance and i fancy them to get a result against germany.

they need a win though

oh no.

what's on tonight - italy-paraguay or something? can't see that being a humdinger in honesty...i'm banking on north korea to give this world cup the kick up the arse it needs.

by beating brazil.

oh god look who's commentating tonight. no wonder roy keane fucked off 8 years ago.

That can only mean Mick Mc. That settles it - I'm definitely gonna watch in the pub, where the sound's drowned out.

i would love it if brazil crashed out. i fucking loathe brazil far more than any of the traditional teams were meant to hate.

Is there a reason for this beyond wilful contrarianism?

probably the same reason scottish people hate the england team. overhyped beyond belief. the idea that anything good can only be done by them. the fluff and pomp and parade that follows them around like they have a devine right to win everything. the sickening sycophancy of commentary of their games. the way someone will score an average headed goal from a decent cross and the commentator will say some dross like "only brazil score goals like that" makes me want to fucking vom.

the way they'll smash some shit team and we're told it's proof they're going to win the tournament.

the way their last two world cup wins were with less than spectacular performances and general capitulation from everyone else.

holland, mexico, spain, germany will be more skillful and better to watch in this world cup

argentina were more skillful and better to watch in 2006

in 2002 turkey were far more entertaining than them and rivaldo's cheating against them stuck in the throat

but we're meant to fawn over them and enjoy watching them.

it drives me fucking nuts.

1970 and all that was before i was born and i seriously do not give a shit. and i HATE THEM.

must say in 2006, all the Jogo Brasil shit from Nike drove me fucking spare. it seemed to be all over the place. (not seen any this time.)

don't know about any one else (please comment if you want), but out of more-than-one time winners, i don't mind Uruguay either way, adore Argentina, really like Germany, and are not at all fond of the boys in yellow or the current holders... ...no real reasons, it's a parcel of the usual deeply personal stuff and some on-field things too, i certainly see what D_Q means in that epic post ^

granted, i would bite my own arm off to actually live in Italy... ...actually, it's more just Brazil ('90 was the first i remember, and i loved Italy then and four years later, hmm)
