Fingers crossed for a result from England today. Even just a watchable game will suffice; a game that ends in tears will be welcomed by me over another that ends in a headache.

Well looks like I got exactly the opposite of what I hoped for. If that Portugal v Ivory Coast match wasn't the worst game of the tournament thus far, then this most definitely was. Pure embarassment.

That was appalling. One of the worst games I've ever seen. Glen Johnson is one of the worst players to ever grace a football pitch. The amount of times he missed the ball or passed to an Algerian player was ridiculous.

Rooney looks injured or just useless. You'd think he'd never touched a football in his life from that performance. Lost the ball repeatedly, stood around looking vacant and seemingly made no effort to get into decent scoring positions.

Fuck knows why Capello brought Lennon off. They need him. Should have started with Joe Cole on as well.

Johnson, Rooney, Terry, Lampard and Gerrard are really letting the side down and the only decent defender we seem to have is Ashley Cole.

Did i mention that we beat Algeria 3-0 about a month ago? :D

:D

at least the Carra booking, i thought, means the better, faster Dawson in the next match.

there again, he'll probably play Upson... ...Joe Cole and Lennon starting, it can't be too hard for him to work out, can it?

At least they might acknowledge this is the case now instead of conveniently scapegoating Robert Green.

Quite liked the way that the back four seemed to spend the whole match trying to find creative new ways to make David James' life difficult.

Also liked the way Tyldesly (I think) was suggesting that Capello was the reason that a bunch of top level professionals all turn into Kevin the Teenager as soon as they put an england shirt on - as if that never used to happen before.

Sorry in advance...

but fuck that was the worst performance by Rooney i have ever seen, however, he is not the cause of what made this awful. Lennon needs to get given the ball in front of him so he can run on or cross it. Surely the Heskey exoeriment has finally run its course - either we go for the route one approach of Crouch or play with the pace of Defoe.

Lamps has got to get hold of the ball and distribute - at present he has become anonymous - just not good enough for someone as good as he has shown he can be.

Barry did alright but and i know i sound like Pleat but width is the key - in the first half Cole did some good stuff on the left.

Dunno what SWP offered over Lennon.

Play with pace, play wth VISION, christ, we are full of players who have played CL at the highest level. We ended up narrow and I wonder if Gerrard has the necessary cojones to actually corral his side inti a fluent and coherent whole.

Yep algeria organised themselves but dear go, the second half was toothless.

gerrard was awful

ashley cole played well, but the major problem we have is that cole plays well and we don't score early on, then all the midfielders start running away, the central defence looks crap and cole ends up having to defend and we eradicate one of our better players

and gerrard was absolute shite.

and gerrard was absolute shite.

I think you might have aleady mentioned this but does he draw any more criticism than pretty much anyone who played midfield or upfront. Maybe Gerrard and Rooney get so much flak cos we know their potential - what is frustrating about England is that we are aware what these individuals are capable of doing and that gap between potential and reality is what really grates ( but is that maybe also what is the problem between real life and art generallY???).

Personally Gerrard is not top of my list of disappointments - Heskey has outlived his welcome...

I'd say that man for man England are just as good as nearly every side in the world (maybe not Spain, Brazil, Argentina). I don't know what's gone wrong

heskey gets some forgiveness because he works so goddamn hard.

my problem with gerrard is that he's overrated shite. he doesn't seem to be able to pass, he had an awful first touch... what we know of gerrard is the drive, the unstoppable force and there's none of that. this 'played out of position stuff' is just a wall to his failings.

i would just drop him full stop. put carrick in. have him and barry control the midfield, drop lampard in with j. cole and lennon in a three man attacking midfield with rooney up front and a) play it on the floor b) play it down the wings. i didn't see one decent cross all night.

oh but whatever, that is never going to happen so hey. the problem, the MAJOR problem we have is that we have to beat slovenia and slovenia only need a draw. and today suggested we can't break down a team who stuff their defence.

so awful it was almost spectacular. the whole match looked like the last 10 minutes of a 3-0 drubbing.

how do they do it?

highlight for me was the Heskey stepover at the start of the second half

rooney's not well

joe cole is having a brilliant world cup

lol @ the joe cole comment

haha

we need to press and play a high line but we have two of the slowest central defenders in world football. carragher should not be anywhere near the england squad ffs

Can't really write a coherent post right now, but think we could really have learnt something from Brazil vs North Korea i.e. the fact you have a free wide man when playing against teams that play with 5 at them back.

Also think the Spain result might have been haunting the team and perhaps explained why they were tentative in attack.

Also, the Heskey step-overs were amazing. If we're going to go out of the cup we can at least do it in comedy style with plenty of those.

This is all so spot on. All the talk about changing formations and bringing in new players is pointless when the team is too scared to do the basics.

And, please - movement! When Lampard gets the ball, Barry, should move, and voce versa. When Gerrard gets the ball, Rooney and Heskey should move. When Lennon gets the ball, everyone should move. The whole team was utterly static in possession. Sheesh, I thought no team at this competition could be worse than France. Bonjour, Angelterre!

formations and team selections wont make the slightest bit of difference. either they get their heads sorted out or they don't. all the other teams ive watched including algeria can control the ball when it comes to them, when it comes to england it bounces 2 meteres off their foot like some special bouncy rubber ball. thats if the pass comes anywhere near feet which in itself was fairly rare.

one of the worst games of football i have watched. honestly embarrassed to be an english football supporter today.

i agree the whole team underperformed but there are some serious issues with the formation/strategy as well. Both rooney and heskey were coming incredibly deep to recover the ball, and heskey even ended up out wide several times to hilarious effect - this simply should not be happening.

disappointed capello only made what were basically like-for -like substitutions, and more disappointed that in 180 minutes of shite football we still haven't seen joe cole.

something is up with rooney and i don't think he should start the next game - but that really is just wishful thinking.
