I think the jubilanis significance is overplayed. It's a ball at the end of the day.

As the Brazilians said, it's like one of those plastic jobbies you would buy down the pound shop - which, similarly, are also (complete) balls, at the end of the day. ;)

Just like a cheap toy ball, it changes direction, spin and speed seemingly on a whim. Goals are scored not because of player skill or lack of it, but purely because of the Jabulani's random factor.

Anyway, rant over.

Darned cockwombles.
Uruguay = cheating fucking bastards. I hope the Netherlands fucking bury them.

Suarez has just played the system - didn't matter if he got sent off in the end. One of the Ghana players should have punched him so hard he never forgot it (so what if they got sent off?). Disgusting.

the first great game of the tournament. i was in bondi looking like vincent van gough the only faux dutchman in a sea of brazilians. never seen a crowd go so quiet after the equaliser went in. wheres your samba now you bag of slags?

Yea Forlan's free kick, tho a nice contact, seemed to curl the opposite way to the way it should've like oneof those placcy beach balls.

hahaha go luka!!!

dutch have been unbeaten for so long now, it's hard to see where they could be stopped, but holland vs spain could be ace... holland vs argentina could be classic revenge.

a '74 * or '78 final repeat would do me, i don't want to see Spain in the final, frankly i don't want to see them in the semis...

well alright that's not strictly true i'm just being contrary and of course ARG/GER versus ESP would surely be more attractive than PAR versus one of them. it's just as awesome as watching Xavi and Iniesta is etc, tiki-taka is not moving me as much as it possibly should.

incidentally, the group-think w Dixon, Hansen and Seedorf at HT in the ESP-POR match BBC coverage was interesting to see, you could literally watch it happening, they were reinforcing each other. i mean being a tad too kind to ESP and not gracious enough to POR. hey-ho. and to an extent at FT actually.

"bit angry about that cheating to be honest"
Who siad cheats never prosper? The ref did eveyrthing right and the guy got sent off etc but it still feels wrong. It turns out that handling the ball then was completely the right thing to do. People in the pub with me were talking about how in rugby you have penalty tries but I'm not sure that's the way to go.

Woke up very excited.
I reckon today is gonna be better then yesterday, too early to start drinking yet though.
Funny clip on the radio there, tuns out everything Shearer says is a question watch out for it.

but they were terrible in the first half yesterday - in fact both Brazil and the Netherlands seemed to suffer from a huge crisis of confidence when the other team was on top.

i'm hoping for Netherlands - Arg too though.

oh yeah i completely disagree with penalty goals and in hindsight ghana had their chance and blew it. it's hard to watch cynical cheating and not be angry with it though. i feel the same way about intentional fouls with no attempt to win the ball, but simply to disrupt an attack so a team can get more men behind the ball.

Bavarian style hats off to Germany. They are fucking brilliant. How many of them would get in the England side tho, Alan? One or two, maybe.

You can almost hear the sound of bookies rubbing there hands together all over the place.

Germany are top class, such a young team too.
Klose's not to far off Ronaldo now with two games to go.

there was a chunk of time right around the hour mark where Argentina looked like they weren't far from pulling it together, and leveling things... but Klose found it the other way instead and just killed the game. Germany looked fabulous... so unselfish and creative for one another. Everything that Argentina (and every other giant in this tournament who has struggled offensively) was not, basically. I am very disappointed that they didn't put a better effort together. But really almost all tournament long Messi has been playing in weird isolation... i kind of had a hunch they'd have trouble further down, when i was watching them play Greece. He seemed really intent to run through 3 defenders at a time, and only make short give and go passes in really tight rather than make obvious easy feeds to open players.
I have to wonder how it might've gone with Veron in the middle with him, but really i'm not sure it would have made that much of a difference.

Fingers crossed all goes well and we see Spain/Germany in the semis... if both teams are on good form it should be a more balanced style clash. Maybe the most prominent distinction being that Spain are actually quite a strong team defensively, whereas Argentina are not at all. Germany could still do serious damage on counter-attacks, particularly if Ramos is holding really high, all the same, i would love to see it play out. Hopefully they don't mail in today's game.

Also, for all the officiating quibbles in this tournament, the Uruguay-Ghana result is the first one that feels fundamentally wrong for me. I have no idea how the soccer gods explain that one (save for some kind of impending natural disaster). Sufficed to say Uruguay is finishing fourth in this tournament.

i know people are unconvinced. i know people are writing them off. i know they lost against switzerland. i know they may look unconvincing tonight. but i still believe spain will win the world cup.
