Seeing people who have the same views of me has made my shitty Monday a little bit better.

is that a joke? russell brand hosting a mixtape? i repeat, he is just not funny. i could see him as sort of a good character (if cod-dickensian street kids via captain jack sparrow is your sort of thing) actor/personality, type of person who would be good working at london dungeon or something, but hes too obsessed with himself. all his best/most intelligent insights seem to be about a) himself b) fame c) himself being famous. dont mind watching him interviewed as opposed to his stand up/films, but the way he conducted/held himself when all the paparazzi were outside his house for 'sachsgate' (also just not funny) was fucking ridiculous. he seemed to enjoy playing the hunted/unfairly victimsed celeb a little too much. back to hip hop though.

I mean... there is so much wrong with it... that much is clear. But then you find yourself singing the hook in the shower. What have you done to me

I used to think that Russell Brand was a massive knob, and then I saw him being interviewed by Paxman, and now I think that maybe he's actually a pretty sound guy who just acts like a knob the vast majority of the time he's in the public eye for some unapparent reason.

Brand's Radio 2 show was often very funny. His stand-up/TV-presenting/film career is shite, though.

This saturday = DJ Drama and Young Jeezy: The Real Is Back.

I dunno, this endless stream of mixtapes is almost depressing (didn't even know Fiend had recently dropped one too! I haven't listened to the Juicy J/Lex Luger tape or the Stalley tape either...).

Anyone heard this yet? Apparently it's solid. I'm going to steal it and see for myself.

I'm uninspired today, far too hungover.+ frowney face.

It's disgusting innit. I have overcome my shameful addiction by refusing to listen to it ever again.

But I can still hear it.

I've tried to watch this but had to turn it off when he tries to defend his and Johnathan Ross's prank and then goes onto to defend what he did to that paparazzi. He talks shit!

This Maybach Music Group album is pretty good actually, although the rapping seems generally quite bland the production is of consistently high quality. Really like ''Rise'' featuring Curren$y and Teedra Moses (produced by ''Start It Up'' Cardiak), ''Self Made'' produced by Just Blaze (again featuring Teedra) and the more straight-down-the-line BMF-ish bangers like ''I'm A Boss'' (Jahil Beats) and ''600 Benz'' are good too. Meek Mill is good but his voice gets on my nerves. Whereas with Ross the voice is probably the main appeal, no? The rest of them (Wale, Pill etc.) I would struggle to distinguish in a listening line-up.

that Max B track ('Money Make Me Feel Better') that Corpsey posted toward the start of the thread is great.

Not hugely into Hieroglyphics but that Casual track is wicked

"Its the Cheikh Anta Diop of Hip hop. The Rhyming Van Sertima. Lock Jaw User Maat-Ra Setepen-Ra.
The planned murderer of land burglars. It's the Twa the first steller people
Nigga we the bes, Rome next to the Olmecs. Who told the secrets to the masons?"

A quick summary of my last month or so's Hip-Hop listening.

Covert Coup is good, maybe as good as Corpsey says, but the best bits are all when Curren$y isn't rapping. If I listen to the whole thing then I build up quite a lot of good will towards the guy, because he does utter phonemes in quite a pleasant, non-obtrusive way. But then he draws for that "Patty cake, patty cake / I'm baked my man" and said good will instantly evaporates. Seriously, that's his only line I can remember. Fiend and Freddie Gibbs are both great though. I think an additional problem is that I have no frame of reference for either the 'life's tough on the streets' / crime / hustling thing or the endless champagne and ho's so I can just merrily take it all on face value. However I have experienced being stoned all the time and it's FUCKING BORING so I don't really want to hear people going on and on about it like it's a religious experience.

Main Attraktionz - Blackberry Kush is great, better than covert coup I think, the only song I'm not fully into is Young As Fuck because it's a bit too all over the place. The rest are great though. The new one of theirs 'Chandelier' isn't nearly as good. It's all produced by some new guy, no Squadda B at all. It's just kinda dull. I like 'I Gotta Youngin Doe', but that's the only one that springs to mind.

ASAP Rocky is mainly good, I like chopped and screwed stuff, I'm inexplicably not bored with people yelling 'swag' yet, it's got nice beats. That New York Bittersweet Symphony one is unforgivable though. It's shit. It would be shit even if it didn't sample The Verve, and then it does. Who thought that was a good idea? It boggles the mind.

I'm working on a Covert Coup review at the moment which covers some of the points you make 4line (can I call you that?). I'm actually with you on the content issue, its relentlessly bland ''I'm baked/in an expensive car'' stuff. Curren$y's lyrics don't really stand out on first listen, either. However, I think what he does with his flow atones for that lack of content/wit. He flows so confidently that he actually disappears a little behind the (excellent) beats on first listen, but on second, third and fourth listen I've come to see it as a brilliant technical performance on his part. I don't think he's ever had (original) beats as good as on Covert Coup, either, as good as Ski Beatz is.

I discuss some of this at greater length in this blog post on ''Blood, Sweat and Gears''.

Supposed to be reviewing 'Blackberry Kush' too. Haven't listened to it properly yet but it seems great.
