for eternity, people have always said things were better "back in the day". the jazzhead beatniks thought new york was over when bob dylan and the velvets came in the 60s. the velvets/warhol crowd thought it was over when the punks came in the 70s/80s, when east village rents jumped from $200 to $400 a month. OMG, what's an old hippie to do!!

we might not like it, but you can't stop change.

The old saying in NYC, if you don’t like the neighborhood, wait ten minutes.

he's talking shit these parts of town are fucking packed there's people everywhere. it is true though that people have stopped visiting. but that's mostly coz word has got round about how much more expensive it is than europe now i think, people can't afford it

i like him in general coz he's totally mad and goes with it, wandering around derby and trying to write about these ugly buildings like he loves them.

in this one he tries to write a whole book about nyc and DC by visiting twice, once for three days and once for about two weeks and he seems totally baffled

and also annoyed

he's probably a good dude and it's good that someone bothers to write something like this. i dunno if you can write a book about a foreign city without spending a bit more time there. especially a massive monster like nyc. it's a good example of an outsider's perspective. sort of wondered if we're at the end of the era where a european can come to america and stay for a month for a project like this. america is so much richer than us now, it's hard to afford to do something like that.
