The US bailed us out in two world wars and we never paid them back. They've never forgotten that, and all our sucking up to them since means nothing to them. We're nothing to them now, and the sooner realise that, the better.

I know we don't see eye to eye about Ukraine, but I agree with you here. It's sobering to think how different the last 20 years of UK politics could have been if Blair had had the balls to say no to GWB about Iraq. Or rather, the intelligence to realise he was being used as a fig leaf. The outcome for Iraq would have been much the same, as the neocons were going to get rid of Saddam sooner or later.

But Blair would probably never have become PM in the first place without that messianic self-belief that made it inevitable he'd want to help free Iraq from the wicked baddie.

We've made a mess of every foreign intervention we've done since at least Blair, all we've ever done is make things worse. The US leads us into these things, gets bored and then leaves everyone else to clean up the mess, Ukraine is no different. And we never learn.
