I guess that's true, but the illusion is different
back then it was an illusion that internet arguments mattered in and of themselves
now it's closer to a true simulacrum thing where real world is reflected back as a heightened, distorted, etc version of itself online

This is true. I'm only a semi troll. Agent nucleus was Unwell. There was a New Zealander on here that was just unpleasant, just a horrible, spiteful troll. And maybe there was one more I can't remember but basically that's it I think.

i like it when posters with only two or three posts suddenly come to the foreground and call someone out on something that seems quite trivial, like last time when someone attacked sadmanbarty for being a fan of crap avant-garde bandcamp stuff when he was newer.

we don't really ever have aggro like that nowadays
aside from truly weird stuff like josef k returning (which I missed anyway) and Agent Nucleus
and even in those cases everything is much more calm and reasoned, more shrug and say "well, you're terrible" and move on
it's for the best. and besides we're mostly all too old for message board aggro.
