fucking hell, recorded cases in US went up 40% in one day, will outstrip cases in China in 5 days if pattern repeats. Germany up by 30%, will outstrip China in 6 days. really nuts. i have no idea what Germany's response has been tbh. fucking hell, they haven't locked down yet, only Bavaria now

i heard something on twitter that i can't verify about them counting deaths in a different way - due to underlying health conditions rather than coronavirus. No idea if that's bullshit or not. Yeah, their numbers are strikingly low, and they do have more beds etc than most countries, so who knows

Just saw a drone flying quite high up outside. Idk why but I got the feeling it was a pro level one, even though I could only see the lights. 1 red, 1 white and then another white one flashing. Basically like a plane. Could tell it was maybe 1m sq in size. No idea what it would be doing around here in this non residential, industrial area with noone around at all. Mentioned it to a mate and he said it could be the rozzers, which instantly shot an image of sentry drones patrolling the streets to enforce curfews. Luckily the exercise from a few days ago is still deterring me from getting too dark right now. But that was a pang and a half.

in fairness, none of the numbers that come out of China (or Iran) should ever be taken seriously. zero new domestically transmitted cases? sure.
but yeah, things are gonna get rough here. the day-over-day % jump was actually worse yesterday (48%) vs today (bit over 41%), but yeah.
obviously that's partially the availability of testing reflecting something at least slightly closer to reality
Illinois ordered into shelter-in-place lockdown starting tomorrow at 5 PM. My job considered essential for now.
CA, NY, CT also locked down, roughly 1/4th of U.S. total pop. If the the fucking federal govt won't order it we'll just get it state by state.

speaking of this, idk if yall saw that Rouhani made a direct appeal to Americans to call on our govt to lift sanctions
can't imagine that having much success - Americans having, obviously, problems of their own rn - but Iranian govt seems pretty desperate
my understanding is that their situation is probably much worse than they've reported, and likely is/soon will spill over into PK and Afghanistan
I think this is odd, i agree, but the other comment people are making, this is like wartime, i think that comparison is apt

I think I am clinging to hope that the very low new cases in China (didnt see the zero, just a v low number like 41 or something) is something close to reality, that there is a way to curb this thing. Uk stats are woefully far from reality due to weird curb on mass testing, now only in hospitals and in infection 'clusters'.
Sounds like state by state will have to be the way to go. Good news that Illinois is being sensible.

Refusal to counter this early enough because of China trade links, loads of travel to and from China even when cases recorded, massive cover-up of the real scale of the epidemic.

I guess it does feel a bit like that, but I just get frustrated at the idiocy of anthropomorphizing a small piece of RNA encased in a microscopic protein shell as if it were a human enemy, with "goals" and a "strategy" that we can understand in human terms, and then not even doing that correctly. I mean, to the extent that the virus "wants" anything, then it obviously would love nothing better than for us to all carry on as normal and spread it rapidly through close personal contact. That way it really will "win".
