I just hate reading off a (cracked) mobile screen, and I don't really know how to do searches and all that, it's all so fiddly. I need actual paper and ink

I do have a job! It's just not very well paid and my rents shot up recently so I can't afford expensive books.

Anyway, what do you think, is there any Hopkins in this or it just my imagination?

Might be worthwhile having a look at the first poem in the book to get some some clues about what he's up to regarding the memory - this one seems relatively clear.

the first one is usually the most coherent in all thesse books. woops thinks it is a cruel trick to make you think you are getting a sensible book then he hits you with the random word word list

Paraphrasing Oliver again, Wound Response starts with a bodily/mental wounding, and describes the bodies response to that wound, from the first biochemical responses, then to the brain signals that register as pain, and finally on to the actual physical bruising.

In parallel to the body's response, the poem describes the instant when the wounding occurs, and describes how it registers in the mind/consciousness and is finally committed to memory.

He's dealt with how the memory works a lot before - reminds me a bit of Wound Response.

Memory plants
Memory grafting

Grafting or graftage is a horticultural technique whereby tissues of plants are joined so as to continue their growth together.

I'm sure there's some Shakespeare that uses this metaphor but I can't remember where now

When I consider everything that grows
Holds in perfection but a little moment,
That this huge stage presenteth nought but shows
Whereon the stars in secret influence comment;
When I perceive that men as plants increase,
Cheered and check'd even by the selfsame sky,
Vaunt in their youthful sap, at height decrease,
And wear their brave state out of memory;
Then the conceit of this inconstant stay
Sets you most rich in youth before my sight,
Where wasteful Time debateth with Decay
To change your day of youth to sullied night;
And all in war with Time for love of you,
As he takes from you, I engraft you new.
