one year when I was in Tokyo I ended up buying this 'kawaii' deck - I have no idea of it's real name, but here is the box cover if anyone can translate, for now I'll refer to it as the 'kawaii plus' deck

View attachment 18941arma

The cover states
otter tarot
PLUS
pink fairy armadillo

around the top of the sun card are descriptions of the sun card like health, growth, things are attractive as they are
then it's "sun" next to where it states "the sun" in English
upside-down on the bottom it states things like your fortune is going downwards, the end of passion, depression

here's a "throw everything into the mix" tarot

HAINDL TAROT

according to the blurb on the side of the flimsy box:

"Rich in detail and symbolism, the Haindl tarot deck draws upon many esoteric and religious traditions, particularly Native American, the Holy Grail, the I Ching, Kabbalah, and the Runes"

from the LWB:

Peh: Mouth, Yr / Err - to err, Mars

"symbolizes an arrogant technology that constantly desires more and bigger monuments to its conquest of nature. Inside of it is darkness and fire."

here's the real Tower from the Flemish tarot

none the wiser, it looks like a tree to me

18847

in regard to this "tower" card from the BACCHUS tarot, the board's number one expert in the French language direct messaged me to inform me that:

"le foudre" means "lightning"

which as he suggests, changes the emphasis of the card....

the Flemish deck maybe deserves more study

while I'm reminded of the Flemish hate of the "Spanish Captain" I will reach and 'draw for' the TAROT ESPAÑOL, a variation on the proper pips style decks, none of that GD nonsense

1715473195766.png

in these variations of the Marseille pips style decks those little coloured dots may be more important than I think [0]... also, note the feather, I may have seen it before....

[0] an "in-joke" where I am really referring to Alejandro Jodorowsky and his late acolyte Yoav Ben-Dov

edit: I'm forever dreaming of a world where Jodorowsky realised his VISION of DUNE and we wouldn't have had to suffer 3 hour perfume adverts starring a rodent featured gimp

That last one has the weirdest lightning bolt, it's like a feather

it's ( I think ) a reference to the Daedalus / Icarus myth, too close to the sun, etc

combined with the "Tower of Babel" symbolism it represents our hubris ( my interpretation )

before I pass out, here is an Italian reproduction of a Marseilles / pip deck by Swiss genius Claude Burdel from approx 1780

TAROCCHI MARSIGLIESI

the lightning bolt / feather looks like a perversion of the 'fleur de lis' to me, maybe a subtle dig at the French ruling class?

for comparison, here is a Yves Renaud reproduction of an earlier deck circa 1751 deck by the master Swiss card maker and engraver Claude Burdel

it comes in a sturdy box, but the cards within are enclosed in a facsimile of the paper wrapping that they would have originally been sold in

1715481663709.png

it could be considered a pain in the arse by some to extract and return the cards to the box but I have years of experience with wraps of speed so the attention to detail is just a bonus in my opinion

The tree instead of the tower is a wild choice. Changes everything I don't know what to make of it! What do you??

wraps of speed
Wraps of speed?

Truly an incredible collection you have, I keep thinking you've run out of decks, and they keep coming in ever more variety!

here's a card from one of the decks I bought at the "TOKYO TAROT MUSEUM".

appointment only, one hour maximum visitation time, SHOES OFF AT THE DOOR

on entry we were presented with a selection of cards, I went true TAROT style and selected from the middle of the stack

THE EMPRESS

my travelling companion was a bit miffed, she wanted to swap ( because the card represents her? )

not the card above, I was distracted, the art below is the one I wanted to show you...

I bought her a couple of decks to placate and then I bought myself the "EROS" deck ( featured many posts above in a blurry drunken attempt at photography ) AND an IL MENEGHELLO limited edition deck ( 715 / 2000 ) that I have never had the opportunity to purchase before SO I BOUGHT IT

and

it contained an interesting TOWER card

when I was in the TOKYO TAROT MUSEUM my eyes were drawn to a particular deck, but then I realised I already have a copy that I bought in KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN, 2019

any town I visit I will try and track down TAROT

we got lost in KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN, which is my favourite way of exploration

we passed this 'shop"

1715899031959.png

????

I don't know what it was 'selling" but I'm sure it was 'bad'

anyway, we passed this establishment by in a hurry

and then we saw a Taiwanese Opera on the roadside:

1715899245243.png

My photo is not capturing the true weirdness of this moment

1715899326830.png

It is 1 pm on a weekday and there is a Taiwanese Opera being performed at the side of a main road to an empty tent

it's OK that the seats are empty because they are occupied by "the GODS" ( so I was informed )

On the left of the stage in the photos above there is a guy sat at an electronic drum kit loaded with samples which go "peee-ooww' and other sounds replacing the 20 plus people who would have had to smash cymbals and strike gongs in a more trad setting, I was pretty impressed and would love the sample pack

and then we found the TAROT shop

1715900058813.png

1715900106770.png

We walked in to an empty room, there was a desk but there was no one there

we could have filled our bags with decks of cards, there was no one to stop us

after ten minutes or so someone wandered down from upstairs where "THE MASTER" was giving a workshop

and I asked if could pay for a pack of cards

Gonna have to spend more time with these

Are you suggesting the 1840 Milano tower may be a bridge then??

The feather idea is fascinating I am going to have to build this into my understanding of the mythic structure big time

Esp since eagles usually triumph over snakes who are usually responsible for falls. This is an avian twist

1840 Milano is an interpretation by a BAVARIAN from MONACO

have I told the story about how I was forcibly ejected from the CASINO in Monaco?
