at the moment I would guess that AR is "winning" - the popularity of Pokemon Go when it was launched shows there is a market for it - whereas I can see that VR will eventually be used for more niche pursuits - the one area where I can see it being adopted is in teaching surgery - sort of a more realistic version of 'operation'
VR's surely going to end up being used for torture/interrogation.

unfortunately AR is gonna be so unbearable that we will run to VR to escape
Do you remember when Google Glass was announced and they were talking about being able to look at strangers and pull up their social media etc? Such a terrible idea. Obviously loads of people were immediately like "Great! You've created the perfect tool for stalking!".

Yeah, i'm all for privacy, but,
to get back towards @Woebot's (v interesting) initial question (which i'm not sure that i fully understand actually - "psyche"? but...)
these devices are like a bit of supplementary brain, containing all sorts of stuff - lots of raw data obvs, but also all our personal stuff (finance, work, dating, porno, social, ...), and all highly customised and completely secret,
like an extension of our personality, but
adam curtis voice
who knows what we are getting up to in these new infinitely vast and complex private spaces that we have attached to our bodies??>??

Everyone's seen this by now, right?
I was gonna post that, but somehow I don't think facebook has it in them. Could be underestimating them though. Seems they've flopped with crypto. If I had to instinctively bet on any of the big techs, I'd say Google, but I don't know if they formally have any metaverse intentions.

Metaverse is a commonplace concept in crypto, with large parts of these communities ready to socialize and create primarily in a digital world. Decentraland, etc, has real estate that is selling for serious sums, in their native currency of course.

a new issue of phrack was issued this week after five years of inactivity - this may be the dying embers of the "underground" "hacking" "scene"

Phrack has always been a reflection of the hacking community, and guess what, the community is moving away from itself. By
this we don't mean that there are no talented hackers, because there most definitely are (just take a look at our authors). We also don't mean that there is no exquisite public hacking, because there is (again, our articles as proof). However, there is a clear move away from the collective hacking mindset that was most prevalent in the past. The word "scene" brings only smirks to people's faces. There are many reasons for this, and we are all to blame

The subtext here appears to be that the hacking "community" has been co-opted by "InfoSec" and "intelligence agencies" - one of the keynote speeches at the DEF CON was by secretary of homeland security Alejandro Mayorkas - probably safe to say he is far from the underground...

from the wikipedia article:
Federal law enforcement agents from the FBI, DoD, United States Postal Inspection Service, DHS via us-cert.gov and other agencies regularly attend DEF CON
