This one was "free", but cost about £80 to mint it during an outbreak of gas warring. I've no idea how much I'll eventually sell it for.

does value on these things usually only increase if they are promoted in some way? how do people find out about them (or more specifically, how might someone find out about one in particular out of the thousands/millions of others out there)?

It's all a bit of a mystery. The bear NFTs are big because they were free, but cost to mint. Huge buzz. Value is entirely determined by what people are willing to pay.

interesting. guess I'm curious how people find out about one particular bear NFT from all the others, in order to build demand and raise the value of that one? will we see the equivalent of PRs who are hired to promote specific NTFs, raise their visibility and value?

Opensea is a great platform for getting a sense of the whole market. And there are a million influencers on Tiktok/Twitter/discord. But mass appeal is the key.

This whole thing has spurred a major rethink about Ethereum, it's actually pretty amazing what it does.

I.e. not a shitcoin after all. Guess I'm no longer a bitcoin maximalist. Bitcoin's measure of value is how it's devouring the dollar through its intransigent scarcity. Absolute value.

Ethereum is the measure of value, NFTs are the objects of value. A not-very closed ecosystem of unlimited size.

The van Gogh Punk one has the same id as the the cryptopunk it's based on. So, a copy that shares some attributes. It's riding on its coattails.

The original it's based on last sold for 15.48 eth. $48,000!

If you're remotely interested, best way is to find something you like an buy it. It starts to make sense, even though it makes no sense. A jpeg a piece of code says is unique and worth $48,000? How does that work? Only one way to find out.

Let your esoteric tastes guide your choices.

I've heard Bitcoin equated to platinum and Ethereum equated to petroleum, seeing as there is more smart contract activity (i.e. DeFi) on Ethereum than on Bitcoin, thus giving ETH more of a utility (namely gas fees) than BTC in that sense. The economics (or tokenomics) of Ethereum changed with that last update but its still not a fixed cap like Bitcoin is. Don't yet understand the details myself, though.

Developers on various podcasts I've listened to say that NFT's derive value from their significance in a given culture/subculture/community. Plus they're (presumably) even better for money-washing than physical art is. But really I;m more interested in how NFTs can be utilized in non-sensational ways to establish digital scarcity, hitherto a paradox.

will the "mainstream" pornography business drive the uptake of crypto?

This bloomberg article, "OnlyFans to Bar Sexually Explicit Videos Starting in October" seems to have caused some consternation in some quarters ( "commercial suicide!", "tumblr all over again!" ) and some excitement and speculation in others that this may be the perfect use case for cyrptocurrency - the decision is based on the refusal of Visa and Mastercard to accept payments from the site

it seems as if Visa and Mastercard are acting as guardians of morality and have previously refused to accept payments for pornhub premium, which drove pornhub to accept 16 different types of cryptocurrency since January ( with a 23% drop in traffic to the site )..

if OnlyFans change their payment model to cryptocurrency then they could continue their current content model - I doubt they will, I suspect they will go under, but you never know...

it strikes me that NFTs would be perfect for stalkers and serial killers in the making "fans", they could exclusively possess their favourite OnlyFans model or porn "star" rather than killing them and keeping their head in the freezer as a trophy...

OnlyFans and Pornhubs issues with their payment processors started when there were reports of exploitative content right? Seems ridiculous that payment processors are the enforcers of stuff like this but I don't think governments are particularly up to the task.
