Regarding PhD topics, that triggers a memory from long ago, when I was a physics postgrad student and was dating a girl who was also studying physics, although at a different university. She had some mandatory course about communication skills for science students, and it was taught by this sort of hip young guy from the media studies department.

He had apparently written his thesis on 'The role of shit in pornography.'

I know someone being stalked and harassed atm and it's terrifying. It's been going on for about a year now and the police are useless.

police were pretty good with me, but it depends on who you get... they took out a restraining order but those only last so long, and once it's expired you've got to rely on your stalker having found a new obsession, and when that runs out...you're on your own...

There's some sort of order out against the person, but she just makes new email accounts or goes through other people to keep pursuing them.

my one got her relatives to phone and threaten my parents, but fortunately it was before the days of "social media"

my advice to your friend: get an answering machine with recording abilities, document everything, I didn't have to deal with email, but threatening calls, letters etc., keep it all - keep your home spotless, because they will make shit up ( had my flat searched by police on account of her baseless accusations, etc., )

hopefully after time they set their sights on a new target, but you can't count on that ( mine resurfaced a couple of years after the restraining order ran out )

Yeah, they've collected hundreds of texts, got recordings of her and whatnot. They also had someone who was beaten up by her and had a witness to it, but the person got scared and changed their mind about going to the police.

Yeah that's what Liza did I think, kept a record - after she'd shown a tiny fraction of the stuff she'd compiled to the police they said it was more than enough to convince a court.

yeah, my parents got a call from someone who reckoned they were 'connected" to "east end villains", I know of someone else who had threats to 'break their legs" ( a previous target of my stalker ), but it really depends if you can find a sympathetic officer and if the stalker loses interest because they've found a new "victim"

I'd have thought this person would have lost interest after a year but they just keep going.
