Spiralling healthcare costs are a problem in many developed countries: it's down to cost disease primarily. If this guy actually tried to become some sort of expert he would have had even less of a motive.
The idea that he will open up the conversation is naive. All he's done is paint his side as extremists.

Personally, I think the jury should convict—not because I think Luigi should be punished, but because I think he needs time to read. It's clear from the context that he was trying to set up a situation in which he can engage in a 20 year research project funded by the state. If the jury nullifies, I'm worried he would have to kill again to get a second chance at it.
