Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

i liked it. good film on the p0rn industry. only gripe for me is that the character ends up just being a device to learn about the industry, rather than a character in her own right.

I knew after watching half of Starship Troopers silently at a bar that it was my favorite movie. I watched it with the sound on later and it is indeed pretty good

I've seen that one. As far as I can recall there is an interesting backstory in that the director had the hots for Maggie and specifically hired her for the film so he could dress her up in latex - I suppose stalking is easy when you have the financial backing to bring the object of your desire to you... he ended up marrying her in real life.

im not sure i can think of any good films about p0rn but i did find the deuce (hbo series) on dvd this week so going to see what thats like. there was a channel 4 series on a p0rn actress too which was pretty good IIRC. the french series the money shot which was on ch4 was actually the best, though i am now considering i might have seen a few too many shows on p0rn.

I really enjoyed the Deuce - although actually I haven't seen the final series. I guess people were expecting something like The Wire - especially as it had all of the same actors but switched round into different roles - but really it was completely different. It had almost no narrative and was just a kinda meandering snapshot of that area, or at least it felt that way to me, I guess there was some sort of story that developed as it went along but really for me that was of at most secondary importance, I just liked the way it captured the time and the feel. I always feel funny saying that as obviously I wasn't there so I have no idea if it was authentic or not but let's just say it made me believe that it was authentic and I really liked the world it created and the little vignettes within it.

I saw a British programme about a porn actress last year, I had no idea at the time if it was channel four or what but I'm guessing it's the one that you're talking about above. One of our friends recommended it and... yeah it was decent enough I guess. The story seemed a bit silly though, if I remember it SPOILERS it ended up with her suing a guy for raping her but losing and the only way that she could pay her legal costs was by filming a lucrative scene with the very same guy. That just seemed too neat and unlikely - basically very artificial.

Swedish film called Border... it's better not to give too much away but I think I can without spoiling it that it's about a woman who works in an airport and searches people's bags to find dodgy stuff, and she can always find if they have anything they shouldn't cos she can smell it... and she can smell it cos... she's a troll. Maybe you're not told that from the start and it counts as a spoiler, but I think that anyone of close to average intelligence will guess that she's a troll from the first time they see her, so I'm not gonna protect you from that. And then, where it goes from there is... well that I won't tell you but it's worth checking.

after the talk upthread about films about a certain type of genre:

this morning I suddenly remembered this funny film, The Make-Up Room, about the making of a japanese pr0n film. It's a no budget affair - there's even an apology before the titles about the poor quality of the picture, but despite that I found it highly entertaining. It's all set in one room, and follows the day in the life of a make-up artist on the set of a low budget porno. The talent all sit around in the room, waiting for their scenes to be shot, but the director keeps changing his mind - the "school girl" reveals she has just got a full back tattoo and so she has to switch roles with the "homely" girl, countless script revisions to accommodate the changes to the cast, a washed up diva helps herself to the best bento boxes, the camera man gets roped in to provide "wood", etc. I'm pretty sure that the some of the stories are based on real events, as I recognised some lines spoken by the money man from an interview with a, now mainstream, director recounting anecdotes about his less reputable work. If you can get past the poor video quality, then it's an engaging 90 minutes.

Rewatched Nightcrawler last night. I didn't remember it looking as good as it does, lot of nice, crisp shots of L.A. - reminded me of Mann. Gyllenhaal's really unsettling too, eyes bugging out and the constant barrage of business and self-help lingo.

I wish he'd get involved with better directors more often. Hes takes on a ton of independent passion projects and I think he's a good actor but it's often with a bunch of whoevers and the films are just OK.

Big name actor like him I imagine could make some really quality lower budget stuff if he could get the right surrounding peices

Watched Monte Hellman's The Shooting with some friends last week Saturday great movie, i like Hellman's driving onwards into the void intensity and just how much of a craftsman he was, it's just so spare.

really liked the deep uncertainty at the heart of it and how it just doesn't leave after the movie ends, Two-Lane Blacktop had it down to a tee and Iguana pushed it to a point where it got ugly and monsterous.

of his two Westerns that i've seen i think i prefer China 9, Liberty 37 but i get why this is more well known
