"The Passion of Joan of Arc" I was a bit sceptical at first, by which I mean the first few minutes, then I quickly realised it was absolutely extraordinary and it kept on being beautiful, brutal, disturbing, visionary, etc.

Definitely need to watch more silent cinema.

I still think that may be the most powerful film I've seen.

I may even say the best, out of the roughly 1650 films I've seen

I'm not sure if there's a definitive score for it. This is the one I watched it with:

Which worked well.

Looks like the Criterion disc has another version with an orchestra/vocals

I subscribed to BFI player this weekend and ended up watching quite a few films:

- Cleo from 5 to 7: really good, strongly evocative of the hustlebustle energy of a city, made me want to check out Paris, the rhythm of life heightened and bottled 9/10
- Pickpocket: struggled to connect with this emotionally, apparently that's deliberate with bresson, but it was brilliantly shot etc., elegant pickpocketing techniques 8/10
- The Great Ecstacy of the Woodcarver Steiner: herzog doc on a ski-'flier' who keeps being pushed to break records by publicity hungry event judges, keeps flying further than the finish line and almost dying, popol vuh soundtrack, definitely worth a watch at 45 minutes 8/10
- The Passion of Joan of Arc: see above 10/10

And on iPlayer:

- Manhunter: brilliant brilliant, dodgy soundtrack only makes it more sinister, best bit: the tooth fairy watching his home video voyuer porn on a projector with an oblivious blind woman drinking g&t next to him, also when he takes her to see a tiger and she's clearly getting turned on by it's heartbeat or something and he's in the corner practically cumming in his pants, 10/10

Rewatched it recently and it gets better each time; love all the procedural scenes with the blue lasers, crisp white buildings and VHS tapes.

It's hilarious whenever the detective looks at his reflection in the mirror or whatever and says "you did it, DIDN'T YOU, YOU BASTARD?" or "It's just you and me, I'm gonna get you you goddamn bastard"

It's a shame Petersen didn't have more of a career, To Live and Die in LA and Manhunter are two of the best of the 80s.

Yeah I meant the new three-hour Damien Chazelle film. A lot more transgressive than I thought it would be.
Thinking to catch this on Friday, was there an interval when you saw it? I don't really care either way, it would just be good to know.

I am gonna make more effort to go to the cinema this year, it's something I really enjoy so why don't I do it? Think I'll try and catch every big new film that looks as though it might be good, that shouldn't be too hard...

I somehow doubt you're talking about the classic and best 1980s UK film about Sound System EVER where Ital Lion take on Jah Shaka?

Was just chatting to a friend, trying to persuade him to come with me to cinema on Friday. He seemed keen, we chatted for a while, felt as though he was gonna join... until he said "love it, seen it twice in fact" and I was wondering how come he's already seen it twice, this three hour epic that is only in cinemas... and then it clicked that we were talking totally at cross purposes...

I think I saw it around 3pm, went to around 6pm. Definitely worth seeing, in my opinion.

But was there an interval? Not that it matters, I will go either way, though if not I may make more effort not to drink for that day if I know it just goes straight through.

I love going to cinema, even when the film is bad it can still be a really enjoyable evening somehow. I'm determined to go loads this year... clearly so determined that I keep saying it. Apologies for being slightly more boring than usual.
