just reflecting on my search for porn between 1998 and 2002, and the weirder aspects of the way this machine runs.
what caught my attention initially was a web page with a listing of every possible xxx term, hundreds of words one after the other. i know that it was used to rank higher on search engines but why have a page of terms on its own? pure surrealism.
more intriguing was when a search brought up a web page that looked legitimate, but on inspection was made up of absurd phrases made with the very search terms you had entered. here the content could be so alien as to be unsettling.
and when i discovered usenet it was flooded to the brim with massive posts of old 640x480 pixel series. i vaguely thought that actual people were paid to upload those pictures, but the comment lines in the posts seemed to be generated with a number of templates and filled in at random, and the series began to repeat themselves over and over.
finally it occurred to me that maybe no people were involved, that the whole thing was automated!
a vast parallel universe of dead ends, re-directions, randomly generated structures and endless permutations of the same, mostly dated (1997?) content.
the wish of surrealism fulfilled in capitalism!
