wondering if/why:
-we measure biological age by twelve month cycles instead of nine
-people prefer to believe in brainwashing over indoctrination
-advertising is nothing more than the circulation between the moneyed and creative classes (or does advertising really do anything ultimately other than annoy, and assert the power of capital)
-lucid dreaming can last an infinite amount of time with practice
-"ethical" investing is futile and just another way to make sure assholes make more money
-mega-corporate bookstores discourage reading with an overabundance of stock while masquerading as choice
-why i cant find an english translation of les ordre par astres by blanqui, and if its worth reading
-where the hollywood version of the john brown story is
-when canada is going to nationalize the oil sands

about as soon as they re-nationalise air canada (which was profitable until it was sold off, now the gov't is always bailing it out) and petro canada - ie never. though it could pay for kyoto couldn't it? that would be weird.
but this is the same country where ontario residents have to fight to keep the liquor control board - ie the most profitable crown corp there is - from being sold off for a one-time cash grab. i can't believe this neoliberal privatisation alchemy still has legs.
ive never really had the time to practice 'dreaming' seriously, and the rhetoric is all so new-agey its often unappealing. even the title of that book you mentioned...if i saw that on a shelf i wouldn't look past the spine. last name, craze too huh? =)
the idea of living a few days in a few hours of sleep seems appealing....sometimes.

unless all the estimates about how much oil is there is purely hype (accomodating futures trading and all) i would like to see at least some debate or numbers about what that kind of revenue can do socially.
or on the other hand, we can give it all to BP, they have such a snazzy looking logo!

I don't like the sound of this at all, I hardly ever dream and if I do I forget it and that's fine by me. I have a vague memory of a dream the other night in which I was standing by my old school's Coke machine opposite the entrance to the common room feeling melancholy for a few seconds, that's the most I've remembered for ages.
Yeah, I love switching off and not existing for a few hours, you get enough sensory overload from waking life as it is.

I picked it up randomly a while back, it's a historical analysis from what I can remember which was what appealed - I can't deal with the new age blah surrounding all that stuff either - but what amazed me was how much reading about dreams infected my dreams, and how much I was lucid dreaming by the end of the book, without trying.
I have alot of really bad dreams, so it was interesting to see how that I managed to resolve them through lucidity. It made me much happier, funnily enough. I can see how turning off is appealing, but I like dreams, even the bad ones.

I was opposed to the idea of lucid dreaming, for me personally, not the book. There is a wealth of fascinating psychiatric research on dreaming, from Freud onwards. But I simply can't be arsed with the act in itself. I really just want to turn off, the idea of being aware of my surroundings (real or dreamt) 24/7 is frightening and tiring. I really do not need to be switched on constantly. Please, my brain can go about it's business of organising and recuperating whilst "I" get a rest from all this crap. A life without the blank non-aware state of deep sleep is like a life without food/music/sex for me.
I was thinking about the BP logo the other day. The mandala has deep significance in many cultures as a transcendent spiritual form. So the flower mandala acts as a symbol of energy, growth and eco-spiritualism, while the company itself is placed subordinate to the mandala nature symbol via the scale and position of the lower-case "bp" type. So humble!or on the other hand, we can give it all to BP, they have such a snazzy looking logo!
Kick off the phony greening process with their bullshit ads... tap the environment as new-religion thing and they're away.
