I just dont know
an obvious one i know, but villalobos' mixes are generally (perhaps surprisingly) un-wanky and self-indulgent (unlike, say henrik schwarz's). r v can be a bit edgy and fast at times, perhaps, but from what i can tell that's no bad thing in your book!

havent listened to it all yet, but what i did listen to was pretty hard, not what i expected at all...

dunno if you can characterise Villalobos DJ sets really. he changes style dramatically from year to year and event to event... obviously on NYE he's going to play a more extraverted set. at Fabric a week or so ago he played (in the main) a fairly introverted, heavily rhythmic minimal tech set, definitely the most unassuming I've ever seen him.

BTW, dl part 2 of the Villalobos above and skip to about 34 mins to hear his newest track. next level, absolutely murderous through a soundsystem...

don't care what anyone says, new Alva Noto is very, very nice. bright timbres as opposed to strict ominous clicks n bass. lush, even.

dude even dedicated a song to John Balance.

are people (not just here) finding minimal house coming up short compared with minimal techno? it's all a bit of a big grey area but just a thought... there's polyrhythms galore in both if you look.

I sympathise with not finding minimal across-the-board exciting, I think there's a fair bit of tunnel vision amongst recent converts, and whole schools of production styles that are likeable enough (Lawrence, Minilouge etc) but hardly set the world alight. And all those post "falling up" "ooh, an slightly ascending tone for ten minutes, deeep" borefests can just fuck off already.

fandango, i've definitely felt that. i have to admit i've felt both sort of losing their grip on me, but the minimal "house" (and yeah, sometimes the line between minimal house and techno is extremely blurry) output seems to be dwindling fast. are there any new minimal house releases of note in the past 6 months?

still haven't heard fizheuer yet! keep forgetting to pick that up...

Keep. forgetting.

definition of minimal anything is very blurry. often all left field, "experimental" techno and house is called "minimal".

it kinda bothers me, sometimes. like it does when journalists just tack "electro-" onto the beginning of any genre to make it seem more relevant or hip. (has this come up before?)

dammit you people are such a good procrastinating resource. must. work...

hmm i don't know about that really, no one calls anything from detroit or chicago minimal unless it's robert hood.

or you could call it jeff mills - as that's really what it sounds like, classic jeff mills in non banging mode.i like it but not as much as th4e limited jap lp that came out last year which was really amazing.

yes as an album i think its one of the best things he's done
- rather fantastic.

i haven't been able to find it for a while, most online stores that still list it have it as out of stock. any suggestions on where i could track down a copy?

i think you should wait till something is released really till its shared about, it's only polite.

i dont think that Ted "remix" will ever be for sale. It was briefly available as a paid download, but I believe this was for a limited time.

however, Clark is the only one to ask me not to make his set on my show downloadable, and it was because he played that Bibio song (this was pre-internet release).
