First thing to come to mind when I hear Brian Bolland is Animal Man.
There was a huge Robert Crumb exhibit at the ICA here in Philadelphia; it just ended this month. It was fantastic to see the strips he did with his brother when he was a kid. And of course, there was a big Devil Girl sculpture in the middle of the gallery. Also, his, uh, portraits on thread spindles were fantastic.
He also did this, like, page full of ads for different Philadelphia head shops, and music venues----none of which exist anymore (except Robin's book store).

So, I spent a few weeks reading Naruto on the DS, seeing as I was looking for something light to read over xmas, and having had my interest piqued after reading a few episodes in Shonen Jump over the last couple of years.
For those that don't know, Naruto is the most popular manga in the world and follows the basic shonen 'apprentice' format, with the main character being an irascible young ninja who is shunned by his fellows due to the fact that he has a demon trapped inside him.
Doesn't sound too great I agree, which is why i avoided it for so long having read so many identikit fad manga. After reading a few issues though, i was totally sucked in . Fantastic art, complex and self contained backstory and context, incredibly dark plot developments and tension and brutally epic battles. I'm now up to issue 430 and am eagerly awaiting scanlations of the new Japanese episodes.
Ill post a few pics once I get a chance.

i fuggin' love Naruto! Haven't read the manga or watched the anime for ages, i need to get back into it. Last thing i read/saw was the Naruto Shippuden thing when it had jumped ahead a few years and they were all trying to track down Sasuke - so much has happened since then apparently... i just love how epic and complex the battles are...

Read the manga! Way superior to the anime IMO, and available online from a few sources...
i don't even know what that is? and why do you like/recommend it? a friend of mine bangs on about all kinds of "golden age" as well as contemporary big titles, and the intricacies of all these, what i think of as, "mainstream" series like Captain America or whatever. i mean he's pretty fucking out there in every other respect from music to politics, but i never knew what he's on about with these comics.

Nah, Marvel and DC are just rubbish at the moment, mainly big "events", crossover tie-in orgies instead of good stories that just succeed because the fanboys lap it up. And in most cases the art just looks shitty to me.
Bought these today
ha wow i just bought that Peter Pan book for a 10 year old! she liked it (not really a normal 10 year old, she watches a 10 DVD documentary on WW2 in one week, for instance, and is thoroughly engrossed)

I'm about 600km from Berlin, other side of the country (Cologne/Bonn area), so no, didn't get it there. Cool your young friend is into this, as a child I always found franco-belgian comics much more beautiful than american superheroes (although I read these too, of course).
And if your girlfriend's english is half decent, give her the american versions, I haven't read these in german but english usually doesn't translate very good to german in comics since german often takes more space.

Wow! Vol.1 of this just came out. Unfortunately its a selection of stories and not the 100 volume plus serialisation, but its still fantastic! Probably the best cooking manga Ive ever read (though Im still waiting on Shota No Sushi).
