i dunno, still goes in waves,
seem to have caught one recently;
pre-glasto session with aba at scala last weekend, very nice, good sound, good crowd, good smoking arrangements, he has redeemed himself in my eyes after the wilderness years at se1,
then 'babylon' on the telly friday night
roots and culture

Just picked up an Augustus Pablo comp called Message Music on Pressure Sounds. It's a collection of his digital dubs. Really worth getting your hands on if you like this sort of stuff. Good sleeve notes as ever on Pressure Sounds releases.

I've little sense of a time frame with this stuff. I know it's basically the 80s onward as that's when the digital gear came in, but my exposure to the tunes is entirely through YouTube, Discogs and Hard Wax and Honest Jons selling represses by labels like Basic Replay, Dug Out and Digikiller. Other than Sleng Teng, I dunno what's a classic, what influenced what. It's just this almost random patchwork of songs I like.

I remember getting this first Courtney Melody one from HJ years and years ago now.

UK invented it in 1984

Paul Blake and Bloodfire Posse - Rub A dub Soldier

sounds like "sleng teng" bassline a year before "Jammy invented it"

also UK invented reggae / hip hop crossover years before BDP

Paul Blake and Bloodfire Posse - Rub A dub Soldier ( scratch version )

1985:

Dixie Peach - Slaughter / Jah Tubbys - Slaughter Mix

this tune got ripped off and called "Tempo" by the Jamaicans

this is all pre sleng teng

'Sleng Teng' was invented in Japan.

not really - that's revisionist! early dancehall used a lot of rock and roll basslines, the Casio just used one as a preset that had already been appropriated by the UK tune I posted above

some kids might be playing this version of the slaughter ( oops, sorry "tempo" ) rhythm this month due to the DKR reissue

I might have played this tune from from 1991 at a 'free party sound system' a decade ago before the dubstep guys came on

Hopeton Lindo - slaughter

this Gussie Clarke Music works productions from the early 90s really don't get the love they deserve

I used to play some of them on the 'free party sound system' in the back room in rusholme ( Antwerp mansions )

my favourite was:

Gregory Isaacs - Rumours

but sometimes I'd swap it out for this to satisfy the dubstep children

ghost writerz - rumours

Love the King Kong and Nitty Gritty tunes on that one.

yeah, I used to play those ones "out" in the back room on the 'free party sound system' when we played at Antwerp mansions - 'i'd have a bottle of rum in my dj bag and I'd chop out lines of crystal MDMA and play roots and Digital reggae before the urban tunes came on
