Pop derived from Grime

Yeah, Shark is back now but you can hear his years out of the game in him. It's not the same guy.

I think the thing about the mega-crews like Roll Deep and NASTY is that they were perfect given how grime functioned and was structured back then. Those crews were built for pirate radio and raves and once the game started to become more about tracks and albums, being such large entities and therefore hard to quickly reinvent themselves, they were the first to fall during that difficult transition. Obv. this applies more to Roll Deep than NASTY since NASTY's demise was mostly the effect of in-fighting, but still few people came out with much to say afterwards.

Basically I don't think that it is any coincidence that the crews who are the most successful now are ones that have formed relatively recently. Boy Better Know has the potential to be what Roll Deep should have been and given that it seems they've extended their membership now to C-Gritz and Jammer it might not be long before we are looking at another much more effective mega-crew.

That's true; I mean, in the regards of albums, it's always somewhat irritating to hear bars that have been used since 2004 or so (Thank you D Double!). At the same time though, it works if this is your introduction to the artist in question. So by that standard, if you take an MC and try to turn them into an artist, you end up feeling let down.

I don't know if BBK is going to become a mega crew, mostly because it's strength lies in it being so scaled down. It's probably why I consider them an RD satellite; because they're under the umbrella of Roll Deep, but they function as their own independent (and ridiculously effective) unit. Now if only say, Trim-N-Scratch, or Cemetery Warriors could be something like that.

Returning to Nasty though, we ended up with quite a bit though, didn't we? Ghetts, Kano, Newham Generals, Jammer... I'm sure I'm forgetting people, but you know. Like I said, if you take away BBK from Roll Deep, Roll Deep's actual impact beyond itself is dependent on people who either officially or silently left Roll Deep (Wil, Diz & Trim)

Not totally sure where I'm going with this, but - does anyone else wish there wasn't such a sharp, obvious division between pop-grime and, um, proper grime? It's a probably an inevitable result of the way the scene has developed, I guess, but I can't help feeling the culture as a whole would be stronger if there was more continuity and less (reasonably justified) moaning on either side.
Also reckon that as time passes and new attempts crop up, Lady Sov's 1st album looks better and better as a convincing stab at making grimy pop music.

bizarrely, it was used in Red Road, the first film from the woman who directed Fish Tank..

^ I still need to watch Red Road....
Lots of the tunes that she did circa Public Warning are good though, I never quite understood the level of hate that was directed at her. Her stuff seems a long way from the 'electro-house track with one verse of MCing' format that has marked a lot of fully-blown grime artists attempts to cross-over.
Having said that, the couple of songs from her second album that I heard were pretty weak.

new Tinie Tempah at number one and new Wiley single both went straight into the UK top ten yesterday. With Dizzee's Florence collaboration also in the top ten still UK 'urban' music is riding high atm
