challengers. didnt 100% buy zendaya as a grown married woman, she just looks too young still, but she was great in all the other scenes. but i loved this more than pretty much any other hollywood movie ive seen this year i think. not a shit throwback attempt but the kind of thing you would get in the 80s, a little bit woody allen-ish, a film about a tricksy romantic conundrum but with a lot of tennis (which is shot like its boxing, each shot feels like a violent blow, and everyones banging their rackets on the ground every five minutes). its shot really brilliantly too, barring a few weird/silly shots here and there, at one point its like the camera is on a tennis ball flying up and down the court which was strange but funny. anyway, for all the ppl that moan they dont make smart films for grown ups in hollywood anymore, this is what you need. it doesnt really go the whole hog in trying to present a psychological profile of the characters or make you understand the dynamic perfectly, but im sick of films or tv shows trying to spell it out in recent years, so this is better, its all about the plot, and holds back enough to keep you guessing and wondering about it a bit afterwards. never cared about luca guadagnino before but now thinking i might finally have to see call me by your name.
