Track 29 I always thought was the moment when Roeg really lost it... It's his collaboration with Dennis Potter, which should have been a dream ticket, but just didn't spark (it's actually based on Potter's early 70s TV play, Oedipus Schmoedipus, which Sphaleotas in particular always raves about)...

    The banning of Rachel Verinder.

I think it's harsh.... but I am notoriously much more tolerant of MC than most ... (and no-one can say I haven't been on the receiving end :) )... I agree with Owen, a period of sin binning is surely sufficient?

You can quite clearly ascribe them to SOME people in Leeds, i.e. Muhammad Sadique Khan, Shezhad Tanweer etc. Surely if there are such things as 'fundamentalist crazies' then they would include the Leeds bombers? But obviously the suicide bombers have a rationale: they don't just act...

OK, so by this logic, surely the USA - which, as you admit backed the Taliban - should also have bombed itself? Yes, but it's just possible the thinking of 'Muslims you know' does not necessarily equate with that of every single Muslim, everywhere.

Jeff Wayne "War Of The Worlds"

I agree (remember this?) - compulsive steamprog sound, with a real punk-edged nihilism (something very much in the original Welles' text) As for the Spielberg film: unbelievably powerful. Post-9/11, post-Schindler's List.... Shock and trauma rather than awe and syrup - some Ballardian...

To Henry Miller: I don't at all assume a coherent agenda shared by all Muslims. That would be preposterous. But the faith demands loyalty be shown first of all to the umma, the global Muslim 'massive' - and there are some Muslims who clearly claim to speak on behalf of all of the 'community's'...

I like Cronenberg's Crash, but think that Sinclair is right when he says it comes from a 'world without news' --- that captures its decontextualized delirium perfectly I think. Whereas all of Ballard's work is anchored very firmly in time and place; Crash is very much a novel of the early 70s...

About time we mentioned Don't Look Now.... How have we got this far down the thread without mention of Don't Look Now? The film with possibly the most shocking ending ever, all the more powerful for the fact that the hall-of-mirrors, cavern-of-echoes narrative has horribly pre-figured it (but...

Just read some of the rest of the site - possibly the most depressing thing I've ever read. Is the sole content of the mag like hyuk hyuk i took some drugs and like got totally wasted huh-huh (beavis and butthead-style snort)...?

has hip hop been "aesthetically brutalised"?

You're so right. I'm converted now. There aren't enough real men! Hail hip hop, it's stiffening men's resolve. In no way like Whitesnake then.

has hip hop been "aesthetically brutalised"?

Why is it beautiful and not an ugly testament to an ugly situation?
