i think sometimes you get this sort of 'more ig'nant than thou' thing with interenet rap fans which can lead thm to dismiss things which are acutally genuinely vry good.
This is true. Agree with the stuff about how region determines flows etc., very interesting (and applicable to Curren$y, who I've been listening to for the past few days).
I've been off the internet for a few days and burned 'Covert Coup' to CD. Consequentially, I gave it a proper listen and am now falling in love with it. The beats are amazing. I find Curren$y quite a 'hidden depths' rapper, although paradoxically he just SOUNDS good when you first hear him. When you listen to his lyrics, the content is very repetitive and somewhat shallow, but there's an intricacy and flexibility to his flow that underlines it all. I think that drawl of his, and the way he settles so comfortably (apparently nonchalantly) into beats is somewhat deceptive - he can sound like he's not putting much effort in.
My favourite track at the moment:
But a couple come close, notably
'Ventilation' - I love that beat so much and $pitta $pittas so intricately on it, not so much quotable lines as a quotable flow: ''White carpets in my scarface house / no undergarments on my star-faced spouse...'' I mean, he's not really saying much there, nothing particularly witty... Some people have told me in response to me doubting Curren$y that a lot of what he says just
sounds good. I think he does have a very musical ear and he uses that drawl of his musically, he drags and accelerates on beats.
I'm trying to stay off the internet a bit more myself, hopefully it goes well but the world of music available online (and discussion of it) keeps dragging me back in.
