Iodine is used in tungsten filament lamps, also known as halogen lamps, to increase the life of the bulb and improve the quality of the light:

  • Longer life
A chemical reaction between the iodine and tungsten in the lamp creates tungsten iodide, which redeposits tungsten on the filament. This process extends the life of the bulb to more than double that of a standard incandescent lamp.
  • Brighter light
Iodine enhances the intensity of the light produced by the lamp.

  • Higher temperature
The iodine vapor in the lamp allows the tungsten filament to operate at a higher temperature, which produces light with a higher color temperature and luminous efficacy.

  • Clearer envelope
The chemical reaction between the iodine and tungsten maintains the clarity of the lamp's envelope.
Halogen lamps are compact and can be used in optical systems for projectors and illumination. The small glass envelope of the lamp is sometimes enclosed in a larger outer bulb to protect the inner bulb and make it more similar to a conventional lamp.

What does the flicker of an eyelid mean?

Usually, it's a sign you need sleep, less caffeine or some downtime to relax.

Cryolite is a rare mineral that is used in the production of aluminum, as well as in the glass, ceramic, and abrasive industries:

  • Chemical composition
Cryolite is sodium hexafluoroaluminate, with the chemical formula Na3AlF6.
  • Properties
Cryolite is colorless to white, and is weakly thermoluminescent. It is insoluble in water, but small fragments become nearly invisible when placed in water.

  • Uses
Cryolite is used as a flux agent in the smelting of aluminum. It lowers the melting point of aluminum oxide, making it easier to melt and reducing the energy required for the process. Cryolite is also used in the glass and ceramic industries, as well as in pest control and as a dye.

  • History
Cryolite was once found in large quantities in Greenland, but the mines were closed in 1987 and the mineral is now too rare for general commercial use. It has been largely replaced by synthetic sodium aluminum fluoride, which is made from fluorite.
  • Safety
Cryolite is considered a hazardous substance, and prolonged exposure through inhalation or swallowing can cause serious health damag

Loads of money in industrial wastewater treatment/disposal these days- like any industrial COSHH disposal really- and if cryolite is a big reducer in smelting then the cost reasoning from an industrial process means it's probably a big necessity, though it seems like it's been replaced by aluminium fluoride now

*

We know a fella from the haz-mat/asbestos days who has gone in on a water tanker truck; most wastewater removal is out on tender to independents from what I gather. So these independents work on behalf of the Veolias of the world, who are probably charging i.e. Sizewell 1000s for removal but only act as the middleman while your independent firms do the legwork. Most older sites won't have implemented water treatment as part of their process so this is multiple tankers per week

Anyway small insight into industrial site outsourcing for you there.

Etymology

In British English first, from French carton (“sketch, cardboard, card”), from Italian cartone (“cardboard, carton, box”), augmentative of carta (“paper”), from Latin carta (“papyrus, paper”), from Ancient Greek χάρτης (khártēs) (see there for further etymology). Doublet of carton and card.

Etymology

According to Strong's Biblical Concordance, from χαράσσω (kharássō, “I scratch, inscribe”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“to scratch”) (compare Lithuanian žerti (“to scrape”)). Modern scholarship rejects this (Beekes,[1] Chantraine[2]) and considers the etymology unknown. An Egyptian derivation was supposed, without any convincing etymon found, because of the Egyptian origin of papyrus. Consistent with the Phoenician influence on Greece in the field of writing (the Greeks adopted the Phoenician alphabet), it has been suggested[3] that χάρτης could derive from the Phoenician word 𐤇𐤓𐤈𐤉𐤕 (ḥrṭyt), interpreted as "something written", cognate with Biblical Hebrew חֶרֶט (ḫereṭ, “stylus; style of writing”).[4][5]

Maybe cos it's white, luminescent

candor (n.)

"openness of mind, impartiality, frankness, freedom from reserve or disguise," c. 1600, from Latin candor "purity, openness," originally "whiteness, brightness, radiance," from candere "to shine, to be white" (from PIE root *kand- "to shine"). It was borrowed earlier in English (c. 1500) in the Latin literal sense of "extreme whiteness."

Theres a theme of alchemy here I think with 'alembic', an alchemical still used to distill liquids.

I thought I'd made a connection with that and 'cryolite' from a passage in Paradise Lost, which uses the word 'limbeck' (the old word for alembic) in a passage about alchemy, but it turned out be 'chrysolite' not cryolite that Milton refers to.
