Loads of money in industrial wastewater treatment/disposal these days- like any industrial COSHH disposal really- and if cryolite is a big reducer in smelting then the cost reasoning from an industrial process means it's probably a big necessity, though it seems like it's been replaced by aluminium fluoride now

We know a fella from the haz-mat/asbestos days who has gone in on a water tanker truck; most wastewater removal is out on tender to independents from what I gather. So these independents work on behalf of the Veolias of the world, who are probably charging i.e. Sizewell 1000s for removal but only act as the middleman while your independent firms do the legwork. Most older sites won't have implemented water treatment as part of their process so this is multiple tankers per week

Theres a theme of alchemy here I think with 'alembic', an alchemical still used to distill liquids.

I thought I'd made a connection with that and 'cryolite' from a passage in Paradise Lost, which uses the word 'limbeck' (the old word for alembic) in a passage about alchemy, but it turned out be 'chrysolite' not cryolite that Milton refers to.
