a WIsconsin farm boy who, with a large helping of grit, a can-do-attitude, and a whole lotta talent made it to the bright lights of New York and SUCCESS spelled in capital letters. Yeah... as mentioned in the first post. Interesting novelist but for me I enjoy his films more. Not just Marienbad in which he collaborated with Resnais, but the films he directed himself which gave him free rein to explore his obsessions (naked ladies, repetition and weird circular plots in which what has happened and has not is never clear). Albeit without Resnais' technical expertise I guess.

the minneapolis / twin cities area used to produce a lot of people like that. it's a hard to describe archetype but one i always have in the back of my head. joel from mystery science theater comes to mind. also mike from the same show. the guys in husker du seem like they'd fit as well. dick cavett would be another general example, although he was from nebraska. all paste peope i guess.
