The Big Heat. I'm embarrassed to say I call myself into film noir and have never seen this before as it's another 10/10 classic. Goes to show the depth of the genre when you can still find films like this. Basically a maverick cop who takes on the big men running the towns corruption.

Lee Marvin's so nasty in that one.

Megalopolis sucked ass. Not even aesthetically interesting as an overwrought mess. Seething with auteurist pomp and liberal senility. I hate the “its a tale as old as time” fake wisdom for social commentary on contemporary events. The Substance was better, both were for babies though. Barbie was very similar to the latter but better than either of them. All three are Democrat virtue signaling propaganda. Sorry to be that guy but no more new movies for a while for me.

I haven't seen this but I must take issue with your review. Coppola is not a simple-minded partisan Dimocrat. Like me, he considers politiphobia to be a crime and purposely recruited fascist and nazi actors like LaBeouf and Voight to be inclusive to all humanity.

"Liberal senility" is ageist hate speech and also politiphobic. One man's overwrought mess is another man's rococo delight so rein in the asceticism, John the Baptist. The function of old people is to spew time-worn wisdom and the function of young people like you is to not give a shit.

Personally, I would give the film 8 out of 10, from the available evidence.

There are too many uniquely conceived and unusually shot scenes in this film to be dismissed as a mere bagatelle. It may be a bit wonky but the overall impression is of a storehouse mind fizzing with novelty even at its venerable age - Coppola is megalon incarnate and frankly he can build whatever he wants on me.

I completely believe you and I'm sure you're right... but inexplicably I still wanna watch Megalopolis (even the name is terrible) in the cinema.

its a great film. i think you will enjoy it rich
Great! I think it's Three Men In A Boat - something like that anyhow - where the narrator says that, when setting out on a walk one will be far better disposed to someone they meet who assures them that the weather will be glorious than someone who says it's gonna fucking twat down - regardless of which turns out to be correct... in that spirit I am very happy to receive this piece of information.

i remarked about it with someone earlier, but with regards to diberts comments, its not a film i feel the need to go that hard for despite me thinking its great. i dont think its a masterpiece that others are making it out to be, but i also dont think its like the worst thing ever. it has to be a comment on culture and the online, like this film has so much online baggage it is an event film more because of the discourse around the film rather than anythign in the film itself, all of which i think has impacted peoples views, they hate it more than they do because of the discourse, or they love it even more than they really do. megalopolis isnt the only film that fits this.

Well I haven’t read any of the discourse at all. I was speaking to my feeling that as a film it was neither intelligent nor interesting visually. I love the Chrysler building and Art Deco imagery a lot, too. The bits with the statues were much too literal but I did like what he was going for with these totems of human progress. I also can embrace the nonsensical and the inexplicable in film. I think we should be able to just watch a movie and say if its good or not without consulting all the takes reading into the creator’s intent or surrounding predicament. But I also think almost any movie looking to be an on-the-nose allegory about American politics vis a vis the last decade is going to be banal. Driver’s character’s genius representing a vision of a better future but feeling totally phoned in didn’t help. I just thought it was mostly ugly, platitudinous and not nearly strange enough to be compelling.

A Different Man was really entertaining. Maybe a little up its own ass in a meta way and sometimes too magical realist but it was also clever and I really enjoyed it, unreservedly recommend.
