Proper long though. Isn't it like fifteen hours or something?Berlin Alexanderplatz is a riot
Petra von Kant, I think that's the first Fassbinder one I saw. I had just started going out with this Spanish girl and she bought the early boxset which has his first twenty odd films in it. We loved that one and from that day on I went to her place every evening where we would watch one or two of his films together until the boxset was completed.I might watch that or bitter tears of Petra von Something
How do you mean? I guess it's like a play in that respect right? A very stylish, bitchy one.Classic film, but also one of the slowest fassbinders.
Big joke in my house at uni cos I got everyone together to watch it and they all thought it was just a massive pisstaker in how ridiculous it is, with the one room
You might like Baal based on a Brecht play I think.I might watch that or bitter tears of Petra von Something
The film "explores the cult of the genius" as "an anti-heroic figure... chooses to be a social outcast and live on the fringe of bourgeois morality."
There is another version of that play with David Bowie! Directed by Alan Clarke I think. You might like Baal based on a Brecht play I think.
edit: my mistake, Baal is directed by Volker Schlondorff, but it stars Fassbinder.
I think it was made for TV, a two part series rather than a film. It looks so stylishNot seen that one I don't think, will check it out
His films are just so varied cos he was so prolific. You've got the weird early ones with almost anti-acting that is so wooden, you've got Querelle which is like a kinda hallucinatory long form Gautier advert with all those impossible looking gay sailors, you've got the proto-Lynch dreamlike noir The American Soldier, you've got glammed up sci-fi that anticipates The Matrix with World on a Wire...
In fact I dunno why WoaW doesn't get mentioned here more, it must be the most dissensus film ever with its Is Reality Fake premise.
Or you could think of it as the matrix but with an aesthetic based around bespoke suits, fur coats and retro-modernist minimal designer furniture instead of "virgin steals his mum's credit card and can finally afford that really cool leather trench coat from Cyberdog".
Thete is also an American film based on the same book, we could compare and contrast.
