New Year's Resolutions

good luck with that... but yes, most of the time its a waste of energy.

mine is... id rather not say actually but just will do it.

male pale and stale
spend much more time listening to music I already have and much less time trying to get more

spend more time cooking, riding my bike, reading books, less time pon the internet.

lots more things I want to do but perhaps another one should be: less ideas you can't carry out. :)

Having less arguments is a good one - for me a big thing was realising that a lot of arguments about people having to prove they are right. Actually other things might be more important.

very nice. great. those are on my list too.

another one for me is become less concerned with being cool, and use the energy in more interesting ways.

more:

really make an effort to repair/reinforce familial relationships... time is a passing and passing.

stop smoking so much ganja, start making the trasition from dj-designer to producer-painter.

go running much more than i do now (about twice a month)

go to england and china.

I need to get a decent job and put some fucking weight on. Seriously.

But before we get into resolutions, how about some new year's confessions? I'll start...

I actually still find quite a lot of lolcats and YTMND pages pretty funny. It's very 2004, I know, but it still makes me chuckle. I even have a soft spot for All Your Base, though that's almost become a bit like the soft spot I have for Nirvana because I worshipped them when I was 14.

Chuck Norris facts I can take or leave, once you get the gist you can have a lot more fun making up your own. Especially ones that violate arithmetic, fundamental physics or formal logic.

I do still agree with my 14-year-old self that Nirvana were a really great band, though. Even if they did unintentionally lay the foundations for emo (in the current sense) - but then, I've never been the sort of person to hold Led Zeppelin responsible for Def Leppard or G'N'R. :)

Kill the beergut

Carry on boxing

Master Thai cookery and knock out red chicken curries that make angels weep

Become more financially astute

Go to Japan and Vietnam. Watch the sun set over the Mekong Delta with a beer and a fag.

Start remembering peoples' birthdays

Stop lumping people into knee-jerk categories

Make an attempt to learn Italian

Definitely less time on the internet, unless it's kelkoo or travel sites ("thank Christ!" - Dissensus constituents)

Wear my newfound Johnny Cash fandom with pride (just cos my mum liked him, doesn't make him 'a wanker')

Disassociate from all family rows and conflicts - they're old and ugly enough to sort it out themselves

STOP PROCRASTINATING WHEN IT COMES TO PAYING BILLS. SHIT HAPPENS, DEAL WITH IT.

(yeah, terribly unhip to say so, but 'Never Mind' is a good album, "Come As You Are" still does it for me)

Ha, as if that's ever gonna happen! I really, really want nomadologist to post some stuff about how chatting on forums stimulates the exact same part of the brain that lights up when you do speed or coke or something. :)

Prolly not as good, in hindsight, as the Killing Joke song they ripped off on that one. Good tune, all the same.

I actually prefer GnR to Led Zep :slanted: Nirvana are a great band, no doubt.

Mine is to spend more time doing the things that I really want to do, rather than the things that I'm addicted to (so, repeating the point about the internet then!).

Definitely less time on the internet

Yeah, I did this last year. Will try it again. This post is obviously a GREAT start

I'm going to find a Russian conversation class. I spent a long time learning Russian at university and it kills me how crap I've let myself become.

And I'm going to learn the guitar.

I want to carry on doing what I was doing before, but with a bit more fresh basil and dried oregano.

Actually, I do have three resolutions this year:

- make a funky tune that's good enough for bok bok to play
- make a garage tune that's good enough for oneman to play
- finish the Fassy M tunes, the narcossist remix, and the new version of harpy

Another supporter, David Greenfield, Ph.D. of the Center for Internet Behavior conducted a study with ABC News.com in 1999 and is author of Virtual Addiction. He believes that some services available over the Internet have unique psychological properties which induce dissociation, time distortion, and instant gratification, with about 6% of individuals experiencing some significant impact on their lives. However, he says it may not best be seen as an addiction but rather as a compulsion. Greenfield claims that sex, gaming, gambling, and shopping online can produce a mood-altering effect.

According to the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery (whose director is Kimberly S. Young, a researcher who has lobbied for the recognition of net abuse as a distinct clinical disorder), "Internet addicts suffer from emotional problems such as depression and anxiety-related disorders and often use the fantasy world of the Internet to psychologically escape unpleasant feelings or stressful situations."[11] Over 60% of people seeking treatment for IAD claim involvement with sexual activities online which they consider inappropriate, such as excessive attention to pornography or involvement in explicit sexual conversations online.[12] More than half are also addicted to alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or sex.[11]

"Several counselors and other experts said time spent on the computer was not important in diagnosing an addiction to the Internet. The question, they say, is whether Internet use is causing serious problems, including the loss of a job, marital difficulties, depression, isolation and anxiety, and still the user cannot stop. "The line is drawn with Internet addiction," said Mr. Zehr of Proctor Hospital, "when I'm no longer controlling my Internet use. It's controlling me." Dr. Cash and other therapists say they are seeing a growing number of teenagers and young adults as patients, who grew up spending hours on the computer, playing games and sending instant messages. These patients appear to have significant developmental problems, including attention deficit disorder and a lack of social skills."[13]

Get a better job (maybe the public sector would be best in the current economic climate, perhaps admin at a Jobcentre, lol)

Spend more time with my gf

Make some more music with my mate and maybe get a gig in town

Go running more (although I hate it in the cold)

Edjumacate myself, read other books than just 70s/80s sci-fi novels

Always eat 3 meals a day, more regular eating patterns in general

Stop winding up and needling every girl I have a conversation with, esp gf

See my parents more

Stop wasting weekends asleep/online

I'm too much of a hoarder to make this apply to me (ie still got my original Walkman II, my Commodore 64 that got me into technology, clippings from the NME (late 70s/80s), stacks of The Face from the 80s and so on) - but I guess for some people this list might make sense
(from http://diveintomark.org/archives/2008/11/03/the-pursuit-of-happiness)

  1. Stop buying stuff you don’t need
  2. Pay off all your credit cards
  3. Get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t fit in your house/apartment (storage lockers, etc.)
  4. Get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t fit on the first floor of your house (attic, garage, etc.)
  5. Get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t fit in one room of your house
  6. Get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t fit in a suitcase
  7. Get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t fit in a backpack
  8. Get rid of the backpack

My resolution is simple: do stuff on a more regular basis

I'm in the Meal Deal
Good thread! I didn't bother making any specific ones at the time, but I suppose there are various things I'm aiming for this year:

GET A FOOKIN JOB
Pass my driving test (second time lucky?)
Get my writing published somewhere
Experiment with mushrooms
Find out if I can actually sing
Visit a place or places in Europe
Read more philosophy first-hand, rather than trying to pick it up from encyclopedia entries/critical summaries/message board arguments.

The languages thing people have been bringing up is interesting. I should probably brush up on my high school French sometime, and it might be an idea to pick up something else, German or Spanish appeal somewhat but I'm not sure why.

Oh, I forgot what is probably my main resolution for the year, a music-related one: to stop listening to the same old record-collection stuff and focus on much more contemporary music. I feel I have a lot of catching up to do.
