there is nothing nice about salvia! it's really harsh and doesn't work very well in my experience (whichI will admit is pretty limited)

Salvia is pure evil. I don't understand how anyone can enjoy it Although it is the only time i've experienced absolute ego destruction....still when i came too i was running through the briars.....

and collapse with clothes on without brushing my teeth nonsense. i did salvia recreationally and it was a BLAST. the party we went to was a hysterical good time -- me and my GF at the time taking turns pretending we were freaking out on pychoactive drugs and fainting with eyes rolling up with a group of people applauding each performance; my buddy walking around with balloons in his t-shirt acting like a playboy bunny trying to get people to feel his breasts. fits of uncontrollable laughter... the kind that you can not stop even when you are very tired of laughing and tears are streaming down your face.

Conversely, the brain is stuffed full of NMDA receptors, but you certainly don't want to be ingesting NMDA...
You definitely didn't have enough/smoke it right - sounds like placebo/threshold effects to me!
no we didn't take very much - smoked it with weed. but it was a good high, kind of similar to opium but more hyper. also a bit like being drunk.
i understand that with the "proper" heavy dosage it is 3 days hardcore purging of body and mind...

I remember an A-level Engish Language class where we were discussing topics for a coursework project to write a persuasive essay on an issue we felt strongly about. We were told by the course tutor:

Not at all - smoked salvia is about the same duration as potent tryptamines like DMT and derivatives. Just a lot more scary - it definitely has a strong dissociative element, but with a clarity of mind and without the sedating effect of dissociative anaesthetics. I wouldn't recommend a heavy dose without a sober sitter who is prepared to physically restrain you if need be..
Interestingly enough, physical contact from a friend which can be useful for people struggling with traditional psychedelics doesn't seem to have much of a beneficial effect with salvia.
It's a fascinating substance all round, in effects and pharmacology.

If you are just smoking the plain leaf you have to smoke a lot as quickly as possible and you have to get it very hot to get a proper hit. It's pretty strange, but even then it's almost impossible to get the kind of effect you'll have from the concentrated extract. Traditional use where it's indigenous generally does not include the use of concentrated extract, make of that what you will.
the 3 days thing i got from friends who have attended workshops conducted by some south american Castaneda type guru... and it lasts 3 days. i think they keep taking it. it's supposed to be a complete breakdown and rejuvination.

Traditional use does not include smoking it, either - as noted the raw plant is too weak to get proper effects. The Mazatacs chew large lumps of leaves, or make water based infusions. The effect (I've not tried this) is supposed to be much less intense and longer lasting.
